Minister of Commerce and Industry has said a number of WTO member nations have come out in support of Afghanistan over its complaint against Pakistan
Qurban Haqjo, the deputy minister of Commerce and Industries on Sunday said Afghanistan’s Complaint to the World Trade Organization (WTO) over the closure of the border crossing by Pakistan will be assessed by a commission on April 6.
According to Haqjo, a number of WTO member nations have come out in support of Afghanistan over its complaint.
“Afghanistan’s complaint will be assessed by the WTO and according to a number of WTO members, they said they support Afghanistan and that it is possible for pressure to be increased on Pakistan,” he said.
Economists meanwhile said Afghanistan should seek out support from member countries and take a strong stand against Pakistan.
“Afghanistan is suffering because of this action by Pakistan and the Afghan government should take a strong position against Pakistan,” said Nabi Sadat, one economic analyst.
Haqjo also said a trade team will travel to India in the near future for talks on expanding trade and transit relations with India through the Chabahar port.
According to Haqjo, India is interested in expanding its trade relations with Afghanistan and wants to help Afghanistan by also transporting goods via air cargo.
“A team of traders and Afghan government representative will go to India to hold talks on expanding trade opportunities and trade relations. India is trying to pave the way for air transportation to transport goods to Afghanistan,” Haqjo said.
Afghanistan’s business community so far has suffered millions of dollars in losses after Pakistan announced fresh border restrictions a month ago.
According to Haqjo, Pakistan also suffered paid a heavy price and is losing one of its biggest export markets.
