GENEVA: The World Trade Organization approved a waiver on Wednesday allowing 75 Pakistani products duty free access to European markets for two years to help textile exports after devastating floods in 2010, a trade diplomat said.

Pakistan trade officials said the deal was expected to significantly increase textile exports.

The deal faced delays over objections raised by countries such as Argentina, Brazil, India, Bangladesh and Indonesia. To allay their opposition to the waiver, the list includes 20 products with tariff rate quotas that will be applied instead of full liberalisation.

Bangladesh, which also relies heavily on textile exports, relented as it viewed the circumstances for the agreement as exceptional.

The waiver needs to be ratified at the general council meeting of the WTO on February 14 and 15 and if approved will apply until the end of 2013.

This is great news. I think Pakistan should be proactive now and utilize this opportunity to the maximum. Possibly initiating an awareness campaign by exhibiting products throughout EU to generate interest.

Finally its approved... Thank God

But the real test starts now... Lets see if we can improve our textile sector after this waiver. The cost of domestic production is already too high that it might not be very useful in the end. Hope for the best

& it will increase pakistani exports by hardly 200 or 250 million dont know why we are so much happy for this?

The flood have accrued in Sindh and the textile industries in Punjab will benefit from EU concession of duty free import for 2 years.

How the govt. of pakistan planning to provide at least some of the benefit to the people of Sindh??????

For your defected information, A huge Taxtile Industry lies in Karachi where the dominent part of labor comes from interior parts of Sind.

There won't be any benifit to Pakistan because there is no power & gas & industries are shutting down from Pakistan, until there are very serious steps taken to eliminate power shortage problems nothing gonna happen.

Govt does not seem serious on solving power issue, these bunch of jokers want to import electricity from india & gas from Iran. They want to make Pakistan dependable on other countries only. The import of electricity from india must be totally ruled out by parliament & SC so that govt will be forced to generate electricity in Pakistan.

I Can see that One Best Way to amend the relations is Economy.

Pakistan Needs Power and India will soon have Plenety. Though India has its own Home Needs to suffice, a share of the same for Peace is not a bad bargain.

Pakistan And India can Unite to Stand for Nuclear Power and Benifit Together. Indian Nuclear Reactors Can Help Pakistan provided the latter can think so.

well regarding power..
nuclear is twice expensive then hydral and coal.
surprisingly pakistan unlike india has huge potential for both..until we exhaust most of them(as india has) we cant practically go for nuclear..as we cant double electricity than nuclear with same investment.
