US secretly met Haqqani leadership
Updated 26 minutes ago

WASHINGTON: Pakistan and US relationships are in state of turmoil after Admiral Mike Mullen alleged that Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) had helped Haqqani network in launching attacks against the US security forces in Afghanistan. But a top US newspaper, The Wall Street Journal disclosed that the US officials secretly met with the Haqqani leadership which Mullen did not speak of.

US officials this summer secretly met with leaders of the deadly Haqqani network, the Afghan militant group closely tied to Al-Qaeda, in an effort to draw them into talks on winding down the war.

Washington has publicly scorned the group, which is blamed with bringing a new level of violence to the Afghan insurgency and is at the center of the deteriorating US relationship with Pakistan.

Pakistan and US officials said the push to draw the Haqqanis into talks has yielded little. The US says Haqqani fighters were responsible for a 20-hour assault last month on the US Embassy and the nearby North Atlantic Treaty Organization headquarters in Kabul.

But the behind-the-scenes American effort reflects the growing realization that a military campaign alone won't bring the Haqqanis to heel—and that compromises are needed to wind down US involvement in Afghanistan.

US officials had already reached that conclusion about the Taliban—saying that losses on the battlefield would drive Taliban leaders to the negotiating table.

The official declined to discuss the talks with the Haqqanis, describing them as "early and not very well defined."

The senior US official said there had been at least one meeting over the summer between US officials and Haqqani representatives. The meeting was set up by the ISI agency.

The State Department wouldn't comment directly on outreach to the Haqqanis. Spokesman Mark Toner, citing previous comments by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, said: "We have a broad range of contacts across Afghanistan and the region…these contacts are preliminary in nature."

A Pakistani official said Islamabad began facilitating contacts with the Haqqanis late last year and set up the meeting this summer in a Persian Gulf country. The Afghan government didn't take part.

The US wouldn't identify the participants; however it was claimed that the network was represented by Jalaluddin Haqqani's son, Ibrahim Haqqani.

US secretly met Haqqani leadership
so they are admitting that they have contacts with terrorist organization in the region and when it comes to ISI they said ISI have contacts with them and supporting them.....their contacts with Haqani is justified and our contacts are act of terrorism ? ....lolz Americans are funny

David Ignatius referenced US meetings with the Haqqanis, facilitated by the ISI, in a column in the WaPO a week or so ago as well ...

But U.S. officials know the ISI also facilitated a secret meeting during the last several months between the United States and a representative of the Haqqani clan. This is the double game that’s always operating in U.S.-Pakistani relations.

... meaning the US met the Haqqanis at the ISI's request?

... meaning the US met the Haqqanis at the ISI's request?

how about we say...the meeting was requested by US & US asked ISI to help facilitate it....... so why blame/single out ISI for having links.... as said earlier all secret services around the globe like to maintain links with these kinda org... :)

... meaning the US met the Haqqanis at the ISI's request?

Nah, i dont think so.

Facilitating means getting the CIA to and from the place, helping them in the other things as well.

lolz are you serious ?
USA request ISI to help them in holding a meeting with Haqani ...its not ISI's request but USA's request

The smoking gun... American collaboration with the Haqqanis themselves.

A fact Mullen ignored and hid from his own people! Why are the American people being made to be anti-Pakistani by the USG? What is the ground work they are building here?

Nothing surprises me anymore. The American midset is difficult to understand and an understatement would be the goalposts change so frequently the left arm doesnt know what the right arm is doing.
I feel America are abusing Pakistan to the the point of "if its wrong then its Pakistan to blame, if its right then we deserve a pat on the back." The abuse and public humiliation that Pakistan has been put through is supreme. I blame the disgraceful leaders the Pakistani people have elected to represent them. I hope the money they have had has satisfied their pallets. By pimping our honour and soul of our nation to have people publically critisise us in the manner isnt worth all the gold in the world. They should be ashamed of their actions.

Whats so secret about this .i must say nothing.USA for past 2 yrs has beeing trying to contact various factions of taliban to bring them on the tale be it through saudis, pakistanis, or UAE.Only thing is usa dont want pakistani cooked solution to afghanistan rebooting it to 1990s again.Thats why whom so ever usa wanted to talk without taliban is either arrested by Pakistan like mullah baradar or eliminated like rabbani.
