World focus has shifted to India from China: Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven

It is my opinion at the current level, India and China are incompatible with terms to a expansive trade agreement as they mostly occupy the same spectrum in Global Economics with a large overlap. China is a little higher and India a little lower.

US arm twisting works on smaller nations so they will sign up with TPP. No surprise there. It just won't work in an organization like the WTO.

Its foolish and Naive to think that India and China cannot come to an equitable settlement. Both have mature and responsible Government who server their people. Our working together is inevitable. China is No Pakistan. China is a very pragmatic nation. There is enough space for both India and China to grow together as it has done for 2000 years in the past. That is the lesson from History.

China will continue to have a few years of slow down pains that is the result of its incredible growth for the last decade. That is inevitable, and is not life threatening. India has nowhere to go but UP. So both paths are set and will play out unless something catastrophic happen.

Don't hold your breath for India to climb down on patent laws :disagree: ........... for all you know, when you fall sick, it will be cheap Indian drugs that save your life or that of your family member.

As for cheap Indian medicines it is more likely to kill me than cure me atleast that's what I infer based on the poor manufacturing practices which leads to one or the other Indian Pharma company handed a FDA notice every other month.

Thanks for the graph! however the lap is there not in terms of Chinese capacity but Indian.

My point was that If India manufactures X then China produces X too but cheaper and probably of equivalent or better quality.

An equitable agreement requires China not to manufacture X or to manufacture X at a higher cost or less efficiently than India so that India can supply X to China at a better value proposition.

LOL. That was a cheap shot. As long as the ratio of Indian lives saved by Indian drugs continues to rise, India will do what is best for India.

FDA is a animal chained to its political masters and their lobbyist. I am sure google will provide you with all sort of evidence that support my claim should you choose to counter it.

USA backed China to balance Soviets, they are now backing India to nullify Chinese influence.
As of large Work Force, expanding economy, and rapidly advancing tech, it is impossible to stop China or India to rise as a major force both Economically, Militarily and also in Science, Tech & Space, but Pakistani, they have no ambitions to drive the world in their way.
They have to counter India only and as they are happy being notable in South Asia, they won't pose much threat to US.
India must also keep an eye on US policy.
We have a reasonable economy and military technology in balance with it. With the time, India's Economy and Military both will rise and US may try to balance us too.
Recent Example is of Surya-2(16000Km range ICBM) development program was put in cold bag.
Only Agni 6(12000KM) is in process. Meanwhile as watching capability, developing both a 10-12000Km and a 16000Km range ICBM isn't technically difficult for India even within this decade. Obviously, it was done so that US may not feel unsafe.
But obviously, India will develop them with time as power expands. Support will go to Pakistan surely to counter India.
Yet I think they will not be able to challenge India anyhow I think. :D
Our GDP per capita will be triple of them. Leave alone size of Economy due to high population and defense budget and military power due to expanded Economic and Technical Capabilities.

In my book there are only two types - Fair for both or unfair to the 2nd Party. The alternative is unfair to me - Why the hell would I negotiate such a pact.

As for the current trend - India - China trade figures shows me how competent the Indians are when it comes to securing their interests.

Yet you expect the same of others. E.g. Patent, free trade of goods but no free trade of services etc.. India will not negotiate any such pack, be it with US or with China.

True, we were incompetent enough to be ruled by the Brits, but competent enough to throw them off and rewrite out own destiny. If our current trade figures shows our incompetence, then I am certain that the future will provide us with an opportunity to showcase our competence.

Competent enough to fight through the cold war with strong institutions and tools to govern our own destiny (Think Nukes). I will sleep easy, will you ?

Well it was a good debate! I guess we have both met at the middle.

In summary there has to be some give and take! for Indian services to flow stateside freely US needs assurances that it's IPR would be protected to a greater degree otherwise India might suddenly find 10K USD fees being levied on Indian H1B visas :)

Again you miss the big picture. Indian H1B profits the US more than India. I would love nothing better than an complete ban on H1B.

It will ensure more outsourced work to India.

So far there is NOTHING US can offer other than threats :lol: ...... and those Never work on India. So guess again, the middle path is yet to be reached.

A strongly religious and culturally diversified caste India doesn't have East Asian work ethnics and high efficiency productivity. It can't copy the East Asian high growth development mode happened in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong ,Singapore ,Korea and Japan.

If large portion of population believe Karma would make their life better in next life, who wants to work hard this life?

We don't need to replicate anything from anyone. Each country has different challenges. Tell me what has China done to restrict PM2.5 concentration in Beijing's air ? Wasn't it was China where bottled air was being sold ?

What India is trying to do with this "Making In India" is exactly trying to "REPLICATE“ China's success. New Delhi's air pollution is much serious than Beijing's, and that is even before India becomes industrialized. As for the bottled air, it only shows Chinese people care about the air quality, and they can afford to import bottled air.

India To Skip Bharat Stage-V, Stricter Car Emission Norms Advanced To 2020

New Delhi: In what can be seen as perhaps India's boldest move to curb air pollution, the government has decided to advance the standard for cleaner cars and leapfrog to Bharat Stage-VI emission norms countrywide by April 2020. That's one year earlier than the deadline announced last month.

Currently, Bharat Stage-IV fuel is supplied in whole of north India. The rest of the country gets BS-III grade fuel. The government has decided to altogether skip Bharat Stage-V.

"Most car manufacturers in India are making Euro 6 compliant engines in India and exporting them. They have the technology available and time till 2020," said transport minister Nitin Gadkari. Bharat Stage-VI is equivalent to Euro 6 emission norms.


The Oil Ministry has assured the supply of Bharat Stage-VI fuel to meet this promise. For this, two-thirds of India's state-owned refineries will need upgradation and the government says it will cost them Rs. 60,000 crores.

According to the Centre for Science and Environment, the move to Bharat Stage-VI will bring down Nitrogen Oxide emissions from diesel cars by 68 per cent and 25 per cent from petrol engined cars. Cancer causing particulate matter emissions from diesel engined cars will also come down by a phenomenal 80 per cent.

"This is a game-changer. This move was much needed since India is 10 years behind Europe. It will not only help reduce public health impact of motorisation but will also positively impact the climate problem," said Centre for Science and Environment's Anumita Roy Chowdhury.

2020 is also the year when the Paris climate agreement, which India signed in December last year, will come into effect and the first five-yearly compliance report will be filed.

Reactions from car companies have been mixed.

"Society desires that we move to Bharat Stage-VI. As a company we'll do everything possible to meet these new norms. The only issue is I want government's announcement to be firm, not changed," Vikram Kirloskar, Vice Chairman, Toyota Kirloskar Motor told NDTV.

Mercedes Benz told NDTV, "We welcome the government's move. We should look at introducing this even earlier as we have the Euro 6 vehicles readily available with us."

With air pollution levels at an alarming high in Delhi, the Aam Aadmi Party has demanded Bharat Stage-VI by 2017. While the Centre could ignore the Delhi government's demand, it still has to explain to the Supreme Court after it asked the government on Tuesday why Bharat Stage-VI can't be brought in by 2019.

Nice to take measure to address air pollution due to motor vehicles. But the main source of air pollution in India is from biomass burning. I hope India will take steps to address this issue as well.

Biomass is used by poor families in the villages who cannot afford LPG. As Make in India creates more jobs, people would automatically switch to LPG and the issue would be resolved.

You could have expedited this change instead of waiting for the economic progress gradually propagating to rural areas, which may take years if not decades. $50 per clean stove is a very small price to pay for its long lasting benefit on your fight against air pollution.

India has been moving more and more towards capitalism.

Diesel, Petrol and LPG subsidies from the government are being phased out.

People would have to move up the economic ladder.
