Chandigarh:
The work on setting up an integrated aviation hub at Hisar would begin during the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Haryana this year. For this, the state government has engaged a Chennai-based consultant, Frost and Sullivan India Private Ltd, for developing Hisar airport as an integrated aviation hub.
Based on the recommendations of the consultant, the aero-city is expected to have housing and commercial development, a global training center for pilots, an aviation university, facilities for aero-sports, aircraft-manufacturing units, and defence component manufacturing units.

The state-of-the-art aviation hub would be spread over 3,000 acres. Giving details of the project, Haryana civil aviation minister Rao Narbir Singh said that first phase of the project would include expansion of the existing runway from 4,000 feet to 7,000 feet, provision of night-landing facility, construction of additional hangers for maintenance repair overhaul (MRO) activities, and renovation of the terminal building.

A budget of Rs 50 crore has been made in this fiscal for the purpose. The Haryana government has requested the defence minister to consider setting up of the proposed MRO hub of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to serve the aircraft and helicopters for defence forces at the Hisar airport.

For this, the state has informed the centre that international border on the Rajasthan and Punjab sides is approximately 200-225km from Hisar. Sirsa Air Force station and Bathinda cantonment were at a distance of 100-150km from Hisar and could be catered through the MRO hub of HAL.

The state government has also written a letter for getting approval of the Union ministry of civil aviation regarding site clearance for developing Hisar aerodrome as an international airport or integrated aviation hub. Haryana has five civil airstrips at Pinjore, Karnal, Hisar, Bhiwani and Narnaul. In addition, three flying training centers have been established by Haryana Institute of Civil Aviation (HICA) at Pinjore, Karnal and Hisar where flying training is imparted to the students.
