ISLAMABAD: The construction work of the much-awaited Dhabeji Industrial Zone (DIZ) in Thatta will be started in July under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and likely to fetch $5 billion investment besides the creation of more than 200,000 jobs.

The DIZ is being developed on over 1,500 acres and Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, during the contract signing ceremony on Tuesday, promised to provide extra land for the extension of the zone saying hundreds of investors are eager to set up their units in the zone.

It is also expected that big Chinese entrepreneurs will relocate their industries to the DIZ which will become a hub of economic activities due to its ideal location being close to Karachi Port and Bin Qasim Port.

The concession agreement between the Sindh government and concessionaire M/s Zahir Khan & Brothers (ZKB) was signed for the development of DIZ at Chief Minister House.

Sindh Economic Zones Management Company chief executive Abdul Azeem Uqaili and ZKB Development Company CEO Mohabbat Khan signed the agreement.

Talking to Dawn on Wednesday Mr Uqaili said the project was proposed to be implemented in two phases of 750 acres and 780 acres each.

Four Special Economic Zones are being developed in the country. Of which three are near completion while DIZ was hit by controversies and litigation as a result it has been delayed by five years.

its right next to karachi. would work like hub; people of karachi will go there to work in the morning and return in the evening. also, sindh govt failed, in the past, to get nooriabad up and running, lets see how they fare now.

this zone has a lot going in its favor: railway line passes through it, it is linked to port qasim, and is attached to bin qasim industrial zone as well as karachi. the isndh govt just needs to provide a proper, hassle free, transport link and road network from khi to the zone, and need a housing society.

As for now it looks risky because its a 2.5 hour drive daily . Let see if pp succeed ( highly unlikely) in giving a good infra and transportation.

What happen with nooriabad will be repeated here . Who will set up an industry in an area where they hv To give bhatta to local wadera and hire their man .

Lots of companies will move there, its best possible location for SEZ in Pakistan outside of Gwadar. But Gwadar have security issues so there is that. SEZ in Punjab and KP are far to away from port, need to upgrade ML-1 line to reduce cost of transport.

SEZ in Punjab and KP are good for import substitution industry, considering 80% of consumption of goods happen in in these 2 provinces along with GB and AJK. Gwadar and Thatta SEZ are good for exports.

Unless mass migration from big cities to that area happen there is little hope

not exactly, nooriabad doesnt have direct access to (fresh)water, rail and port. dhabeji does. the only reason it can crash and burn is that the executing agency is ppp led govt

the area is far from khi and driving to it daily would take 3 hr up 3 hrs down so not a daily thing for anyone and then their is this fear of losing your life or valuables on the way as it passess through some of the shity areas of Karachi...so most probably this will be turned into a housing society 50% dha dhabeji 50% zardari inc paisa Pakistan pay karayga!

this is classic wardi wadera modus operandi;
