Withdraw troops, let Afghans decide their future: Hikmatyar to Trump

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Hizb-i-Islami Afghanistan (HIA) Ameer Gulbadin Hikmatyar has asked US President-elect Donald Trump to pull out its troops from Afghanistan as the decade long war yielded no outcome and let Afghans to decide their future.

Hikmatyar expressed the view in an open letter to Trump who defeated Hillary Clinton and become the 45th president-elect of the world powerful country in November 8 election.

He writes: “It is hoped the US leadership this time will take a sincere decision regarding the afghan unproductive war, a decision which the earlier leadership of Bush and Obama administration failed to take that could have bring the ongoing war to an end.”

Hikmatyar told Trump the new leadership of US would inherit nearly two decades of useless war that claimed the lives of over 300,000 innocent Afghans, over two million were forces to migrate, thousands of NATO soldiers had been killed and wounded and billions of dollars were wasted.

He addressed the US president-elected and said the people of Afghanistan wanted to see Trump in the white house who would help bring the Afghan war to an end that brought miseries to Americans and Afghans.

The HIA leader said continuation of Afghan war would not be in the interest of American people. “Ask the US generals what they achieved in the 15-year long conflict,” he questioned.

Hikmatyar asked the US leadership to let the people of Afghanistan to decide their future and resolve their own issues.

Hikmatyar is no doubt an intelligent guy.. This will put Talibans to back -foot and will raise his stature also among afghans. Once troop leaves no body will have justification to hold weapons..

Those Talis who have close ties to Pakistan will not lay down their weapons even after foreign troops leave as long as Pakistan feels, it doesn't have a friendly government in charge in Kabul. Troop withdrawal will at least tell which factions of the Taliban are ready to make peace and which ones want total power. Foreign troop presence is their excuse up until now not to lay down their weapons.

In Afghanistan, the insurgency is led by the largest ethnic groups "pashtuns" while in Iraq the insurgency is mainly led by Sunni Arabs who are a minority in Iraq. Of course that is not to say all Pashtuns are Taliban supporters of all Sunni Iraqis are ISIS supporters.

In Afghanistan, the insurgency is led by the largest ethnic groups "pashtuns" while in Iraq the insurgency is mainly led by Sunni Arabs who are a minority in Iraq. Of course that is not to say all Pashtuns are Taliban supporters of all Sunni Iraqis are ISIS supporters.

Well if all that matters is majority rule why not follow your logic by breaking Afghanistan up into separate Pashtun, Hazara, and other entities rather than keep it united?

Well if all that matters is majority rule why not follow your logic by breaking Afghanistan up into separate Pashtun, Hazara, and other entities rather than keep it united?

Because unlike Iraq where the Kurds want freedom or autonomy, there is no real desire among any of the ethnic groups in Afghanistan to separate. I am not suggesting majority rule is all that matter but you can't have a country where the majority is ignored. Eventually the majority will gain its rightful place.

Some do want the troops to stay and some don't. Some don't want to negotiate with Taliban or Hikmatyar at all due to a number of reasons and some do. There are wide range of opinions just like any other country.

NATO wanted to use ISIS to topple Assad but Putin outsmarted them. ISIS are mostly former Baathists, extremist Al Qaeeda members and disenfranchised Sunnis who lost power after Saddam's fall and the subsequent failure of Iraqi government.

Pakistan should also leave this country on its own , stop interfering in their politics and talibans. Close all borders with them , no illegal entry. Send refugees back, limit afghanistan to only trade reasons .

Some do and some don't. I get there is a difference of opinion but this seems disunity. Some want foreign forces to stay and others see them as foreign occupiers who need to get out???
