2013 Tree Census indicates 19.2% growth rate; number of trees has gone up by
48.2 lakh trees per year.
Swathes of arid land compose Gujarat, barring certain green pockets that *** the
topography in the tribal and Saurashtra belts of the state. But the land has impro
its tally of Trees Outside Forest (TOF) in the last decade, reveals findings of 2013
tree census of Gujarat. Tree population in non-forest areas of Gujarat has improv
by 19.2% in the decade 2003-2013.
Trees were counted three times in the last decade 2003, 2008 and 2013 to
emerge at the results.
The tree census in Gujarat was conducted using random systematic selection
method. Villages were selected at random and in proportion with total number of
villages in that taluka. About 995 villages were selected and all trees here were
counted. The data obtained were extrapolated for each district to find out the tree
population in different girth classes.
The exercise enumerated 157.11 lakh trees in 8,10,145 hectares of non-forest are
in 995 villages of 26 districts of the state. This statistic was extrapolated to whol
Gujarat to emerge at 30.14 crore trees in 2013, a figure which is higher than 25.1
crore (excluding Dangs) in the first tree counting in 2003 and 26.87 crore in the
second tree counting in 2008. Dangs was not counted in the first census, and thu
theres an increase of 4.82 crore trees in the ten-year period, at an annual increa
of 48.2 lakh trees.
The counting indicates that there are eight districts with tree density of over 30 tr
per hectare. Anand tops the chart with 66.1 trees/ha, followed by Tapi (64 trees/
and Gandhinagar (63.3 trees/ha) to round up the Top-3.
There are four districts with poor tree cover (less than 10 trees/ha), including
Surendranagar with the lowest 2.8 trees/ha, and Kutch, Jamnagar and Ahmedaba
TOF contributes about Rs5,000 crore in tangible benefits to the state economy. It
stores over 56 million tonnes of carbon in its growing stock, with a decadal growt
of about 20% in carbon sequestration.
