William Hague visits Pakistan for talks on regional stability
BBC News - William Hague visits Pakistan for talks on regional stability
Foreign secretary William Hague has arrived in Pakistan for discussions on how to stabilise the region.

His trip comes amid ongoing tensions between the governments of Pakistan and the US over supply routes to neighbouring Afghanistan.

Mr Hague will meet President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and opposition leaders, ahead of elections in the country.

The foreign secretary will also talk to women's rights activists.

There is anger in Washington over the failure to eliminate militant safe havens in Pakistan, and the continuing ban on Nato convoys bound for Afghanistan.

If i represented the Pakistani government i would request William Hague not to play messenger boy. I think the games and so called negotiations have gone on long enough and for the UK to attempt to patch the differences up is futile. If the Americans cannot back down with the 3 or 4 stumbling blocks and compromise then forget it. We don't want this relationship anymore on their terms - simple as that......

I don't get these people....can't they understand the simple demands of Pakistan...these trip shows how much they intensely need our help. I hope these nato supply's never open

Well, it shows how intense the situation is, but let the talks windows open , in the end of the day, only talks will. Going to decide, the situation on , the ground.

Just apologize Obama..if what you say is indeed true ( that the strike was a mistake) then why can't apologize. It only gives the message that strike on our soldiers was intentional.

Britain voices concern over Pakistan-US deadlock

ISLAMABAD: British Foreign Secretary William Hague voiced concern Tuesday over the seven-month impasse between Pakistan and the United States on reopening Nato supply routes into Afghanistan.

Pakistan shut its Afghan border to overland Nato supplies after US air strikes killed 24 Pakistani soldiers last November. Washington has refused to apologise formally for the deaths.

The United States said Monday it has withdrawn low-level technocrat negotiators from Pakistan after talks over getting the border open again failed.

“We look to the United States and Pakistan to work successfully together and of greater concern to us, even than those lines of communication, would be a rift between the United States and Pakistan,” the visiting British minister said.

He said he raised the issue in his meetings with Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar, and hoped that both sides would find a solution.

“Obviously we want this issue to be resolved and of course we raised it and discussed it today,” Hague added.

The withdrawal of US negotiators signalled further strains in relations between the nominal allies and follows criticism from US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta that saw Pakistan’s army chief refuse to meet a Pentagon official.

The negotiators had been in Pakistan for about six weeks and US officials had believed they were close to a deal with Islamabad to lift the blockade.
