What's new

Will Russian anti-aircraft systems from Greek air defence forces, be replaced with Western ones?

We should get 2-3 batteries of Patriot MSE.

But since we should also get IRIS-T SLM to replace the Tor-M1 and some other system. Iron Dome is pretty cool. We have to replace so many firing units! S-300PMU1,Tor-M1,OSA,HAWK...maybe even Skyguard? Is it even useful now, against all these UCAVs and loitering munitions?

So far our defence is this:

There's two reasons for that:

1. The S-300PMU1 was ordered by Cyprus, but Turks threatened with war if the system was installed on the island,so a diplomatic solution was found between Greece,Cyprus,USA,Russia and Turkey. We got it instead and put it on Crete.

2.The Tor-M1 was purchased back in the late '90s if I remember correctly, during the PASOK rule, where ministers were notorious for taking bribes ;) Just like with some German companies.

Also,a lot of equipment, like the BMP-1 Ost,9K111 Fagot AT,RPG-18 and OSA AK/AKM were bought from ex-East German stocks, back when they were giving them away after the reunification of Germany.

those two and the crotales are actually your best air defense system

But the Americans would only give Patriot.
If Greece is giving all those systems to Ukraine in return for Patriots, ask the U.S. for Avengers and the new SHORADS the U.S. has been developing if Greece is patient, besides the Patriots.

Think they are already doing it.

Greece already operate MIM-104 Patriot (6 Batteries IIRC) and is planning to replace the remaining S-300 with Patriot, at this moment, half of the Patriot system operated in Greece are Greek, the other belong to US and Germany as NATO partner. But on the other hand, Greece being an peninsula and island nation, the main Anti-Air Defence should be focusing on the Navy. To which Greece Frigate and Corvette, of those, most are operating US (ESSM/SM-2) or MBDA Aster Missile

What Greece need to replace is short to medium range ground base missile in case their enemy punch thru the Naval Defence. Tor and Cortale have to go, probably replaced with NASAM or other similar European missile. Long Range Strategic Missile are either for Ballistic Missile defence or to support the Navy Sea-Air control.
That is a lot of systems that Greece could provide to Ukraine. I've read it would take months to get a working Patriot battery into Ukraine with trained crew. Could perhaps with these systems immediately familiarized by the Ukrainians would be traded by the Ukrainian govt. for Patriots that are promised in months ahead? They get the systems soon instead of months. Especially during the winter.

I guess they're at a point where they can't say "it's ok,we have enough". They have a huge country and they can always use more AA systems, especially Soviet-designed ones, which like you mentioned, they can use easily.

right now vetoed by turkey . in future maybe
What are you talking about?
