True, I should have worded it better, but I didn't want to get into a long winded response. Regressive patriarchal attitudes can exist in the absence of conservative religious views, though more often than not one sees the two together, each reinforcing the other.

Yeah there is a certain overlap when certain interpretation of a religion (ultra-orthodox in most religion) re-enforces gender divide but more or less it is a common issue world -wide. Less developed countries suffer more obviously.

Going by some similarly disgusting statements made by conservative politicians in the US and Pakistan, the anecdotal evidence suggests that these attitudes are tied to conservative religious beliefs.

Some politicians are neither, they change colors when it suits them.

There's a reason I choose to describe myself as a 'liberal' instead of as a 'democrat' (using the US as a reference point) or a 'leftist' - they are not always analogous. I have acquaintances I would describe as 'liberal' based on their views on gay marriage, women's rights etc. but they support Republican candidates because immigration and small government are extremely important issues for them.

I suppose part of the issue is the context in which one uses the term liberal.

I haven't seen the context in which he supposedly made these remarks, it's quite possible that his remarks have been twisted or taken out of context. This guy would be among the last guys among the politicians of this state I would expect to have such a comment attributed to.

This question is not as meaningless as is being made out here. The courts of the KSLTA are closed after 6:30 pm. Anyone hanging around there at 9:30 pm is certainly not there to play tennis at that hour.

So how far do you take this?

Today you tell women they should not go out after 8 PM . Then something happens to some girl at 8 so you tell your women not to out after 6 and so on and so on, until finally you tell them not to leave the house without a male guardian. Then you stop educating them ( where is the need, they are just sitting at home anyway), you take awAy their right to drive (after all what happens if you have an accident and a man is in the other car).

Fewer and fewer women outside means that society becomes even more hostile to women and Eventually, we become Saudi Arabia.

The answer is to pull the minister out by the ear and give him a tight kick and then insist that enough budget and training is provided to t he police to ensure the safety of a woman even if she decides to walk alone at 3 am in the morning down a dark alley singing "old king cole" at the top of her voice.

As you wish dear friend...I of course love freedom and indepedence of everyone...But slowly Bangalore in turning into like another Delhi...

Although I do not like Congi people...But even the same question to my mind, what is she doing at night 9.30 and playing Tennis?...That does not of course discount the crime of the rapist, but i am even surprised why women does not take little bit of precaution about their own safety...It is always better to be safe rather than sorry.

Very well said. Even in US, people avoid going to certain areas of downtowns in the night (some during the day too).

In this aspect, I found cities in Canada much safer.

Every city has its own dynamics...Indian society as a whole is yet to be matured enough to provide complete secure life to women like it is provided in West...I hope it will happen sooner the better

Very true. If she was on a busy street like Brigade Rd, even at midnight it would have been safer.
