Why USSR beat Germany but not Afghanistan?

The casualty difference was not that great. USSR lost about 10 million men. Germany lost about 5 million men. Germany used surprise tactic but later when USSR caught up both sides had roughly equal casualty rate.
That's only true when it was clear that the German plans started falling apart. The 10 million figure to 5 million figure is quite a massive difference, even then, the Germans during the later stages of the war were still suffering far fewer casualties than the Russians.

The Russian tactic was sending waves of soldiers (meat shields, cannon fodder) to overwhelm axis forces, which caused a lot of unnecessary deaths. Nowhere is this more evident than the battle of Stalingrad.

Flatten the mountains with bombs.
only if it was that simple.

Germans didn't underestimate Russian winter , they believed Russia would be defeated quickly and there would be no need to carry all the winter gear with them.

Hi,

Here is what screwed up the germans---they thought themselves superior to the Russians----the only thing the germans had to do to win the Russian war---was no to do the LYNDIE ENGLAND and Abu Ghraib shit on the populace.

The german just had to treat the Russian soldiers who laid their weapons and Russian civilians in the areas they conquered in a more humane and kinder way and Russia was done----.

The Russian public was waiting for a savior from communism and the germans gave them the worst.

History repeats itself----. Over there was Hitler---supposedly God's chosen race---over here were George Bush and his Chosen generals and BORN AGAIN CHRISTIANS---who talk to God and God talks back to them and for who God also guides their careers----.

Both sides committed horrendous atrocities on the civilians and military personale----both had to leave with their tails between their legs---. The germans ended up dumping their misery on the middle east---and God almighty---so did the americans----.

The Russians went back home to hibernate---.

I think it was because of numbers. During WW2 USSR deployed tens of millions of soldiers, hundreds of thousands of aircraft, tanks, artillery. Heck, German soldiers were deaf from all the shelling. Had USSR used such force in Afghanistan, I doubt Taliban would have survived.
At the height of the Afghan-Soviet war the USSR had around 115,000 troops deployed in Afghanistan. That is by no means a small number when taking into consideration the undermanned opposition they faced from Mujahideen groups.

The Soviets had so many troops deployed in Afghanistan's mountainous terrain that it became a nightmare resupplying their positions.

wiki gives 115,000 Soviet troops deployed at peak. Not a very large number IMO.

Interesting video. They all came. From Mongols, Huns, Scythians, Alexander's Greeks, Turks, British, Russians, NATO.

because USSR know that if they were defeated by Germans , they will be under Hitler's Command , but in Afghanistan , they knew even if they lost , its not going to cost them much , but some Russian Soldiers life ..
another reason was that Russian take Western Help to Afghan Mujahedeen lightly ..

That is the point,, they underestimated the RUSSIANS and though they will be able to defeat them in a very short period. IN reality, Russian employed on a policy of strategical retreats, they kept dragging the Germans here and there in the huge country, avoiding deceive confrontation and the winter arrived, rest, we all know very well. :)

On a side note, this is the same policy used by some famous Muslim generals against the Romans, Iran empire and then against the crusaders.

not as much as they , more like Hitler himself underestimated Russia , the size of the country not the people.
if Hitler only let his Generals have the actual say in strategies instead of making important decisions himself , who knows how WW2 would of turned out.
