Why the US May Go to War in the SCS

Reason for war? - Protecting US' hegemony. History repeats itself. Maybe tomorrow, maybe next decade. It is bound to happen. Remember USSR and Cuba crisis?
Now reason why it won't be an all out war? - Because both countries can not win on ground.
No country can defeat the US on ground or anywhere else. Case closed...(US can defeat anyone anywhere, because the war if there is one..which I dont think will happen, will be fought on US terms.

You're wrong again. Ever heard about the Sino-Russia border conflict in 1969? Where hundreds of thousands of soldiers were committed and hundreds died? Possession of Nukes did not prevent that conflict from happening and it did not escalate into an all-out war either. :smart:

well yes, the Soviets were fighting for/in their own territory(not for another country) So they had every reason to engage in war/shed their blood for this/same with China. Its also why they didn't intervene when China invaded Vietnam years later (even though they had a mutual defence agreement with Vietnam). The thing is no major power will accept to shed its blood for you, more even so when it means fighting/putting its own territory in danger for you. The risks far outweight any gains from this, even more so when it means fighting a nuclear power as well. except that country itself is being threatened then yes. If not, then its a NO, NO.:disagree:

However this isnt the case with the contested islands in SCS which isnt a U.S territory and which several countries are claiming it as theirs. So why would the U.S risks a major war which will affect its economy and maybe even territory over these small islands with no real value?lool As i said as it stands the U.S already controls Asia from its military bases in Japan, Korea, acess to bases in Philippines to diego Garcia in Indian ocean facing India, to its bases in Hawaii etc It simply has no reason to risk a major war for these islands, if not even during the scarboroh shoal incident it would have intervened(having a mutual defence treaty with Philippines). The reason is its simply too trivial a reason for the U.S to engaged itself for these small matters. However, if China or even Russia to make any move against/threaten U.S military bases in Japan/South Korea. Diego Garcia or hawaii, then thats another matter altogether, which will justifiably require a swift military response from the U.S no matter if its means going to all out war(even a nuclear one). :agree:

Do you think the US will fight a nuclear war for Britain?

Let's say if Britain got nuked by a major nuclear power, would the US let you to access the code of the Trident II missiles and to launch the nuclear retaliation?

That's a tricky question since US and UK both share the same blood. However, it is not a direct threat to the US homeland.

Even Japan's current naval assets won't last long against us in a conflict.

Nope Japan can sure hold its own against China or Russia independently(nuke not involved). However i cant say the same for any other Asian country out there.

They don't have their own ecosystem to sustain everything, so they don't stand a chance.

well yes, the Soviets were fighting for/in their own territory(not for another country) So they had every reason to engage in war/shed their blood for this/same with China.

In other words, the Soviets were fighting for their own interest and China was fighting for her own interest. I have no problem with that.

This shows that you havent read the article properly. The author did not claim that the US is willing to wage a war for other countries. The PhD author said that the US might wage a war in the SCS for their own interests and he explained what those interests are.

Whether his explanation are plausible or not, it's up for debate.

How many countries have the US defeated so far in the past in a war that involved China since WW2 - when China was really backward in weaponry and when US was much advanced and backed by its allies :dirol:

Without USA, the Japanese wont stand a chance against either China or Russia :coffee:

Of course the U.S will allow us to use our nuclear weapons if we were to come under attack. Since the U.S will also be greatly affected by it, it also has a military base here as well(though a minor one). Moreover our nuclear based deterent is mainly sea based, and its diffcult to keep tag of nuclear submarines, so no country can dare us in the first place..

We all know (well i thought we all did) there will never be a war between nuclear powers, since no power can attack a nuclear one, NEVER. Not even the U.S will ever attack small crude backward North Korea, nor wil any nuclear power: China/Russia ever dare attack us. So forget about other bigger nuclear powers. Its just our fanboyism on here that makes us say such unrealistic stuffs/wishful thinking. Nothing more.:bounce:

Strange. Why don't you count another country? Twins, do you know? :D

To me, the writer just want to find another business, and the poster just want to find any potential candidates for support.

The problem is that the US has the control over your nuclear weapons, if they don't give you the access code, then you are screwed.

If they give you the access code, then they will also be involved into a nuclear conflict.

That's why it is a tricky question.

It seems like you and your friend are confused and disagreeing with each other. Please tell your officer that the Yijing diagram explaining how to deal with forum members need some adjustment because you guys are still confused and not sure about the identity of some people here.
