Why isn't Pakistan an industrial country yet? When will it become one?

Well the thing is that countries like inda Pakistan bangladesh are still young because it has not bee that long since our independence.. Then the british oppressed us for too long as a result we have have a kind of inferiority complex towards the goras and we generally think that we cant do sh*t while they can turn the qorld around. While here in india such thinking is gradually fading away in pakistan it is not coming that fast because with respect you guys let the americans and chinese come grab the heart of your nation... And it dont seem like they will let go of your economy and country easily as long they can make profit there. I mean i living in one of the easternmost town of india have been amazed to see the rate of development since the last 6 years or so...before that we just lived because we ought to..now we can have almost everything any indian can have... Ibdint mean pakistan will nevet industrialize. It will and is but at a slower pace...secondly you guys always blame raw but the thing is that isi have been hraising a havoc in our state since long...everybody here knows that and most importantly you should give immense importance to modern cheap education... Over all i think that pakistanis are a bit patriotic and hope that attitude will help you...btw i live in assam

.
Secondly it doesnot seem that india will ever miltarily disturb pakistan.. The defence gap between india pakistan is less than india china ...india currently uses 1.7-2.0% of gdp. Pakistan should too decrease their military budget eg. Take for a decade and invest in infrastructure with chinese help then as ur economy start to rise so will your military budget.. You have dependable powerfull deterrent which is enough . and at this 21 st century it doesnt seem like india will invade pakistan or something like that because such act will follow international pressure and sanction. More over our beloved modiji is not that nittwit. Pakistan is in a very storng strategic location through which it can gain much but if pakistan keep getting involved in kargil like acts it will negatively impact on both india and pakistan and as for " soo many poor people in india" and blah blah look at our ssooo oooo oooo many middle class and upper class people and please dont compare us to african countries because if you guys read some international news i am sure you will get it clear that the advantags of india overwhelms its disadvantages...

.
failure towards industrialization was begun when Bhutto started to nationalization of Pakistani companies and industries which were booming in the Ayub khan period ..............
after that in next 2 decades foreign investor weren't interested in investing Pakistan due to fear of nationalization

Few observations. English speaking population and labor force is in top 10.

GDP, Account Balance and HDI is simply pathetic.

I guess there are some advantages in being agriculture based economy, number 1 ranking in donkey production.:rofl:

.
Japan is a exceptional example. I know some people have recieved no education till 10 years old and graduated with first class honours by age 18. Does not mean everybody can do the same. Most countries have had iron and coal like UK ( Sheffield ) Germany ( Ruhr) India ( Jamshedpur ) USA ( Pittsbirgh ) and others like Iran have massive amount of oil.

We have sand, more sand and even more sand. Most of our agriculture is because of artifical irrigation even there some of those rivers flow through your country and their water has been diverted. We have chronic power shortage because of no fuel. Check your electricty generation and see how much is produced through coal. Then check ours. Non is through coal and we are being killed by import of expensive oil to fuel some of the generators. Reality is we are being punished because of no fossil fuels.
You have lots of coal and iron ...

Edit; You are reducing our entire problems down to no trade with India as if that is some magical capsule ....
Despite all the advantages you have exactly how well are you doing. Why not grab your gross and divide it per capita and it is only marginally better then Pak even than you have problems with mass poverty and malnutrition worse then Pakistan.
Sir "Trade with India" might not be a Magic capsule but it is not nothing either. We Indians may curse and degrade Chinese for various reason, but at the end of the day we still have a very healthy trade relation with them. Obviously Chinese are better than us in many fields, I never negated that. And trading with them only got us with Chinese to the World stage faster. There are hell lot of stuff which we use here that are not manufactured in China. Even though we are patriotic, why do we use Chinese products ?? B'coz it's cheaper to just trade the stuff than manufacture it. And latter use those stuffs to build our own industries.

I will give you a very basic scenario. A small medium prototyping/manufacturing industry needs a 5 axis CNC machine. One can get top of the line machines from Germany or Japan. But the problem is they are prohibitively costly. Solution, get a cheaper version of same stuff from China. Get you business going. You cannot guarantee 100% quality 100% of time with those tools. But they provide enough profit on Investments to update to better stuff relatively fast.

One more thing. A leg in future and another firmly grounded in reality will work wonders for any individual/country.

Pakistan being an agriculture country is unique. There are not many countries out there in the world that have this capability.
Our role models should be Denmark, Netherlands and Italy.

Italy is heavily industrialized

Denmark's agricultural backbone are swines and beer, i assume out of the question for Pakistan :P

and Netherlands is petroleum refinement, medicals etc etc...and those flowers of theirs, tulips.

Reason being we were and are ruled by a few dozen families.... we will not prosper unless we put a level playing field for all... an area that is accountable to all... e.g.
1) Tax all... everyone... drs, politicians, lawyers, agriculturists and even whole sale dealers. people "not filling tax returns" should not be allowed to own more than 1 house, 1 car or travel abroad to anyplace other than saudia.
2) make the luxuries expensive... e.g. anyone who owns a 3rd or more house should be taxed on a different level above the basic need. same way a person owning 5 or more cars... tax him... all bikes of 600 cc plus or cars of 3000cc or above should be taxed heavily on an annual basis.
3) no one should be allowed to have more than one factory in a few sections of economy... read sugar mills.
4) Tax audits should be conducted randomly by 3rd party till the FBR brings its house in order.
5) change ur attitude, educate people, make education less expensive. this should not be an industry. People will only chnage as they will get educated. you cant throw these families out.
A society is given leaders amongst them.. jaisi quom waise hukumran.

Stop blaming politicans for all your problems. Pakistan is one of the easiest places to do business, zero tax and cheap labor with large market.

Its the people who are not pushing their businesses forward into corporates and take their profits out of their country to places like Dubai, US etc etc.

well most of the problems are attributed to bad politicians and there bad policies.

A few years back Hyundai established a manufacturing facility in Pakistan where there were making SHEZOR trucks. Now Shehzor you may have noticed is a very common vehicle on Pakistan roads and being in manufacturing business i know how good they are an there value. IN short, this was a vehicle with true potential, were manufacturing here in Pakistan creating jobs and was a potential of export so generating foreign exchange. Then our beloved Zardari sb came to power asked for commission and the Hyundai ran away. NOw do you seriously think that if we will contact general motors of ford they will come and invest in Pakistan? wont they ask about what happened to one of there competitor ? wont they fear that if Zardari comes to power again the PRESIDENT OF PAKISTAN will shamefully be asking for commission again???

THIS IS JUST ONE EXAMPLE!

Pakisatn is most corrupt nation in South Asia according to many Experts (and many Pakistanis).

Plus there seems to be a lack of vison among Paksiatni Policy Makers.

I think these 2 are main reasons why Pakistan is not a Industrial Power.

Well calling Pakistan as a corrupt nation in general is not fair. The problem likes with the decision makers and we have had our fair share of corrupt decision makers and policy makers. They lack vision and commitment to the national cause and that is creating the problem.
I mention that once incident about Zardari, now about NS, see that they have given millions on laptops to students. While many criticize the scheme altogether just for sake of criticism my point of view is different. IF the gov though that spending millions on tax payers money to give free laptops to the students was absolutely necessary, need of the hour and only way forward, i wish they had the vision to get these systems manufactured in Pakistan. With 200+ millions populations and millions of computer users, DELL and HP have a healthy market in Pakistan. If GoP could have reached one of these and asked them to setup a plant here in Pakistan guaranteeing the already existing market share plus a few million extra confirmed purchases for the laptop scheme think who great that would have been. \Would have started a new industry in Pakistan, would have created jobs, would have saved us foreign exchange we are using to import these laptops and would have generated foreign exchange by exporting Made in Pakistan systems, would have trained a workforce for future developments. Now in this case, the same amount of taxpayers money would have been used for the laptop scheme but in this case they money would have yielded 7/8 different positives.

Now finally they have decided to go to haire Pakistan for future laptops, better late then never but still i cannot stop winching and the opportunity of a manufacturing plant and investment by Dell or HP,, brands with international scope!

When did they become industrialised?

This will help you:
List of IMF ranked countries by past and projected GDP (nominal) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There's really only China, South Korea, Turkey and some Arab countries in Asia that have heavily industrialised in the past 30-40 years. The rest are still where they were 50-years ago.

India wasnt Worlds 6th Largest Automobile Producer and Number 1 Milk Producing Nation 50 years ago.

It is now.

Do you think this is possible without industrialisation?

.
I've been wondering for a very a long time about why Pakistan has such low industrial and manufacturing output, considering that we're the 6th largest country in terms of population, have more land than many European countries, and are rich in natural resources, so why haven't we industrialized?every government whether civilian or military always spoke about "industrializing" when they were in power but nothing really happened.

I've reading since I was child that Pakistan was an "agricultural" country, and now in 2015 we still are.

Neither do major brands want to make in Pakistan nor do we have our own indigenous heavy industries.

What's the reason for this?Could somebody who understands what's required for a country to go industrial explain why we haven't?

Some might say it's cause of political reasons, but even during the cold war when we were very close to America and got lots of AID and investment, we never industrialized, yet countries like Iran who have been under sanction for 40 years have much more manufacturing output than us.

when Pakistan will become an independent country it will also become an industrialized and one of the best Nations of the world.

People are burdened under taxes that are imposed to cow them and to check their graphs and trends. Only selected are allowed to go upward. Those who try to hide their wealth from cruel taxation are regarded as Tax Thieves. Many try to take their money out of the country. Make Pak tax free for its people and the money will flow into the country.

Get rid of the Saudi wahabi mafia that has destroyed the basics and foundations of the society and is investing to spread corruption in every nook and corner of the country and only keep wahabi entities as holy and clean cows and do not allow others to become clean and holy and INDUSTRIALZED.
