Let's keep the discussion constructive and not a d!ck measuring contest where we all hurl insults and call each other names.

Normally this is the duty of the city mayor. Why s/he can't do that? I know there is a huge workforce in India, so hiring people for clean up jobs shouldn't be that hard. Is the problem lack of funding? How is the tax system in India? Do people pay enough tax?

I've watched the entire video now. It's very inspiring. However I was still unable to understand problem comprehensively. I mean, I live in Istanbul and in here also we have lot's of idiots who throws garbage to streets. But there are street sweepers in Istanbul who are municipal workers and gets paid for doing this job. They keep the streets clean.

I don't wanna be stubborn about this one because it's your country after all. You know it better than I do of course. But I do strongly believe that the mayor should work harder to fix those problems and the voters should push the mayor. I mean underway passage filled with urine?! That should be the best excuse to replace the mayor.

Since most people do not care about cleanliness or where people shit and piss they do not demand any of those services from our law makers.... thus you will have a very hard time finding these kind of workers...

Its like a cycle. So there will never be a chance unless the people demand it.

People are more interested in things like religion instead of these kind of things which should have been around for decades... but whenever you switch on TV or visit the South Asian section of this forum you will find mud throwing contests and flame wars about mass conversions, "morality" or people spreading pseudo scientific nonsense...

India over populated without much of living space not enough land to store the trash depose by billion of Indian, don't have money to pay enough Indian to clean up India trash. Over population is the reason Indian live in a filthy condition.

Sense of cleanliness infused in childhood is best way. If all scools have very clean toilets with teaching staff emphasizing on this aspect, child will develope a very good sense of hygiene for his entire life. You must have noticed that kids who are use to going in clean toilets actually refuse to use dirty ones or outside. I'm afraid wrong habbits once set are not easy to go as adults. Schools provide very good controlled environment for this habbit to develope. India might look into this as one of the solution.

That was an excellent video and the presenter was modest enough to hide his face while encouraging others to join his movement of "kaam chalu, mooh band".
Now the question, why is India so filthy???
I feel there 're 2 reasons for it:

1) Climate- Most of the Indian states get atleast 4-5 months of monsoon showers and because of its proximity to equator the temperature is around 30-35 in most of the cities, which by the way is an ideal temperature for bacteria to grow. So while you 'll see that the food stuff which remains intact for almost a week without being refrigerated in Denmark, the same food would rot within a day in India. Its the temperature that makes all the difference. You can apply the same logic to the obnoxious smell that comes from the garbage bins in India.

2) Our attitude- Our attitude of I DONT CARE is what keeps India so filthy. We 've a tendency to get used to something very easily and most of us're lazy enough to change our ways. But let me remind you we 're also quick to point fingers at others and blame somebody else, because that's the easiest thing to do.
Albeit I see a wave of change coming through,I hope it continues. And with the "swach Bharat" campaign that Modi has started, am sure India would become a cleaner place soon enough.I'm sanguine about it!

Lot of reasons, but as mentioned by another member.

Its the mindset, we have become so used to filth on the streets that we have stopped noticing it altogether.
Since the people don't demand cleanliness as an important aspect, any elected politician - like the Mayor/Chief Minister/xyz - does not bother to give it and ensure the cities are clean enough.

So the primary goal is to ensure that the mindsets change. When people start demanding absolute cleanliness the politicians will start falling over each other to give it.

Secondly, a massive population tends to put massive burden on any civic infrastructure. Its the second most important problem.

And mindsets are changing but slowly. The movements like the video quoted above and the Prime Minister Modi now making cleanliness a priority and asking citizens to be better is going to make things better in the future. The Prime Minister taking up cleanliness mission as a priority has made a huge difference to the public consciousness.
