Why Is IAF tilting towards Non-Russian engines for Indo-Russian Joint Military Aircraft Project?
Published December 28, 2015
SOURCE: IDRW NEWS NETWORK (INN)
Major contention between Indian and Russian officials to jointly to develop a military transport aircraft seems to be the use of tried and tested Soviet era upgraded derivative of PS 90 engines to be used has a power plant in the military transport aircraft (MTA) to replace Indian Air Force’s ageing fleet of Antonov AN-32 aircraft.
Indian Air forces have a large fleet of IL-76 aircraft based transporters, mid-air refuellers and AWACS are powered by a different derivative of Aviadvigatel PS-90 high-bypass commercial turbofan is not so keen to use the same engine on MTA without a full authority digital engine control (FADEC) system to give adequate power to the new plane.
Well-informed sources close to idrw.org have informed us that due to lack of proper supply of spares for PS 90 engines which is leading to the considerable amount of downtime of its IL-76 aircraft fleet, IAF is considering using other Commercial engines either from the US or European manufacturer.
While IAF has not spelled out engines which it could prefer for MTA aircraft comparable engines in the same league with FADEC system could be derivatives of Pratt & Whitney PW2000 PW2043 used in Boeing C-17 Globemaster III or Rolls-Royce RB211 engines which are mostly used on commercial jets.
Indo-Russian MTA Project has been in limbo for past few years now due to Indian air force which is keen on having a modern powerplant and now that Russia planning to go head in developing their air force variant, India will have to bring Russians aboard or make them agree on the alternative powerplant.
