So we all know Asad Umar has resigned from Finance ministry. It is in the news that he has been offered Energy ministry by Imran Khan as a replacement. But so far media is reporting that Asad Umar has refused to take up the energy ministry. Why is he doing so. I think he is a qualified person to run the energy ministry and it is an important ministry. Isn't it childish on part of Asad umar to refuse transfer to another ministry, is it a matter of ego in his case because if he wants to serve the country then he can still serve the country by running energy ministry.

. .
I think he s a bit hurt because IK was not satisfied with his performance. I must say it was not an easy job. He may join after some time but right now, he is hurt.

May be you are right, he may join the cabinet later when the things will cool down.

I think it is a good thing he is not taking any new position in the cabinet especially energy portfolio. All this nonsense about it being due to performance or pressure from opposition (what opposition?). He was done dirty from within the party and even from PM house. As nobody came to his defense and concentrated campaign was run against him and is still running in the media and social media by people who are thought to be close to PTI. Like if you see Sabir Shakir's YouTube video posted on 18 April he claims that Asad wanted to join PMLN or PPP but Shuja Pasha told him to join PTI. With Shahid Masood in end of March ran a week long Marathon against him on the basis that the Chinese loan of 2.1B is taken on 5% even though he clarified weeks before that it was at 2.5% now someone was lying my money is on Shahid Masood lying, he on his 15th April program claimed that finance ministry has told gas distributors to calculate Dollar at RS. 180/- which at this point seems illogical, he constantly aludes to that Asad wants to replace IK.

If Asad takes power ministry here's how I think it will go. There is already more than a trillion rupees circular deficit he will be blamed for that. There are already planned price hikes he will be blamed for that and than he will be changed on "performance" basis.

I definitely didn't have this angle in my mind that energy ministry is also not without controversies. This seems reasonable then from Asad Umar's point view to not accept energy ministry and once again take the blame of negative aspects related to that ministry too. May be he should then take a ministry which is not much in the lime light of the media like the ministry of Shafqat mehmood. This way he can gain experience of running a ministry long term which would be helpful for him in future setups.

Good post.. hadn't seen things from this point of view.

I think some influential camps inside PTI were scared that if Asad Umar succeeds he will be next in line to replace IK to lead PTI. Umar being the sada shareef admi was in no camps and hence had no one to fall back on when the wolves came hunting.

Asad Umer has wasted valuable time since taking oath. His first step after taking oath should have been ban on non-essential imports and putting tariffs on others to curb imports.
He has done it now, which is first step towards tightening the belt.
The trade deficit should have been the first priority from hour 0. Pakistan cannot live like this anymore.
$18 bn trade deficit is daft for a country like Pakistan. Exports would take time to improve. Curbing the imports is and should be the first target. The third equation in the trade deficit are remittances, which are showing improvements. These two dimensions would decrease the trade deficit in short run. In the long run whole strategy has to change. Dar has brought Pakistan near to complete disaster.

Whatever you say now can’t change things. As others have mentioned, he becomes victim of a game by people within PTI. In my opinion he should not take any position in Cabinet. He needs to spend time with his family and it better that he takes a break from the media. He should focus on his Constituency (NA-54) for next 3 years (if this government survives).

I am sure if Asad decided to leave PTI, there will be many non-corrupt people will follow him.

Brother, if you have seen my recent posts on this topic, I am no friend of Asad Umer. I have criticised him for almost 4 months now. He is useless, he should have known even before taking over. As I and anyone who understand Economy knew. He wasted very valuable time of Pakistan. I will open another thread and explain what mistakes Asad is making. In short he had realised the problem with Balance of Payment and Trade Deficit.
According to the new figures branded only a day ago, (I don't know if the figures are correct) the Deficit has gone down by 80%. If true it is a big development. But Asad has ignored many other indicators and section of the economy while concentrating to curb the imports and trying to increase the Exports, for which he has taken some targeted measures.
Unfortunately, Pakistan's problems are sever, not just one dimensional.

As for Asma, you cannot say that she is blameless and was just interviewing Dar. Through out the program she gave the impressions that Dar is right. IT is criminal for a journalist to do that.
Secondly, have you ever seen in the West a Criminal , a fugitive of law given air time on national TV while refusing to return!!!
Come on mate, this is not acceptable.

Asad, had created lots of problems for the economy. He had handle on the balance of payment crisis, which was coming in to the correct direction, would have helped Pakistan in the long run.
The problem is that the economy wasn't doing great and pressures were building.
I am glad that IK took a swift decision because the delay would have caused more damage.

He was creating an atmosphere where the business confidence was eroding.
The tax collection was dropping. He should have paid attention to these two pressing issues.
These are the two main issues, which should also have immediate priorities like Balance of Payment crisis.
All things have to move in sync for the economy to work. You cannot ignore any aspect of it, and should have handle on it, otherwise you are doomed.

Great! Good for Pakistan and good for PTI.
