What do Iranian and Pakistani military establishment have in abundance are Chinese supplied Missile arsenal which pose a common threat perception to both India and Israel military establishment.Over the years, Chinese have supplied Blueprints or knocks of Missiles ranging from Subsonic cruise missile to Anti-ship missiles to Aerial weaponry for aircrafts to both Iran and Pakistan.

Israel had to learn it the hard way when INS Hanit a Sa’ar 5-class corvette of the Israeli Navy was attacked by Hezbollah fired Chinese C-802 anti-ship missile supplied by Iran. INS Hanit even though equipped with Phalanx CIWS gun and Barak 1 anti-missile systems couldn’t see attack coming since there was no threat perception of Hezbollah been in possession of Chinese C-802 anti-ship missile due to which Ships Defence system was not active that day.

Barak 1 which are equipped on Indian and Israeli warships is a formidable point defence missile system (PDMS), but one of its major disadvantage always has been is that it lacks in Interception range which limits it to max range of 15km against Incoming Aerial threats .

Chinese-supplied C-802 anti-ship missile with range of 120 km to 280km depending on the variant uses a 165 kg semi-armor-piercing anti-personnel blast warhead which relies on the missile’s kinetic energy to pierce the deck of a ship, penetrate into and explode in the ship’s interior.

The Same missiles can also be found in Iranian made Moudge-class frigate and Pakistani navy operated Jalalat II class Missile Boats along with Chinese-supplied F-22P Zulfiquar-class frigate of the Pakistan Navy. Variant of which can also be fired from JF-17 Thunder fighter jet supplied by China to Pakistani air force.

With Similar threat perception, it was obvious for India and Israel to work together in the development of Next generation missile defence system. Long-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (LR-SAM) was successfully test-fired for the first time from a missile test range in Israel last November and currently preparation are underway to carry out first test firing from Naval platform in India onboard INS Kolkata Destroyer type of Indian Navy in fully operational condition where it will Intercept Anti-ship missile fired from another warship positioned in the vicinity .

LR-SAM is an Advanced air and missile defence system which has be designed to be used in all weather conditions to deal with simultaneous threat engagement, even in severe saturation threat engagement.

LR-SAM provides Ultimate protection against a variety of aerial platforms in both Land and Naval Scenarios. Land-based variant under development known as MR-SAM for Indian air force and Indian Army will be ready for first testing firing in 2017 and DRDO already has developed New Truck based transporter erector launcher (TEL) for the missile system.

LR-SAM can be used as point defence missile system (PDMS) and as long-range anti-missile and air defence system which has very short reaction time and fast missile launch capability with 360-dgree coverage against any incoming threat in range of 70 km.

LR-SAM backed by State-of-the-art phased array multi-mission radar along with two-way data link and flexible command and control system can provide protection against a variety of aerial platforms and munitions like aircrafts and sea-skimming missiles.

DRDO has developed missile’s Dual-Pulse rocket motor, as well as pneumatic actuators and arming/safing technology While Israel supplied battle management, command, control, communication and intelligence centre system.

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) is now also working on extended-range variant of its Barak-8ER interceptor with the addition of a large diameter solid-propellant jettison able booster to the existing dual pulse rocket motor will double its range to 150km.
