India’s super secretive indigenously developed first Nuclear-Powered Ballistic Missile Submarine (SSBN) INS Arihant has reportedly cleared all deep sea trials along with all major weapons trials and now is ready to assume operational duties in service of the nation.

INS Arihant will provide India with much-needed second strike nuclear strike capabilities against arch rivals and also complete India’s triservice capability to deliver nukes from air, land and sea. Arihant will become operation with K-15/B-05 solid-fuelled SLBM with a 750km-1000km range.

But it will be INS Aridhaman which is the second Arihant-class submarine currently under construction at secretive ship building Centre in Visakhapatnam which will completely overshadow INS Arihant when it be launched by 2018.
Bigger

while Aridhaman has been dubbed as follow-on SSBM which India is currently developing, it cannot be considered as Sister-class vessel of Arihant since it will be longer and bigger even though it will share similar design aspects with Arihant.

More Power

According to media reports, Aridhaman will be powered with newer and powerful BARC designed Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR) which will be able to generate enough power to gain additional speed and carry larger vessel.

But many Defence Analysts are not so convinced since BARC till date has not carried installation of any new land based Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR) nor confirmed development of new reactor but Analysts have not denied that reactor to be used in Aridhaman might be same as Arihant but with major improvements in safety aspect and improved overhaul performance due to design optimization .

More Armaments

INS Aridhaman will be India’s first SSBN which will be armed with 3500km longer-range K-4 SLBM which will be more China-centric weapons system rather then K-15/B-05 which was more Pakistan centric missile system and will play a key role in providing deterrence capabilities against China.

Aridhaman will also have bigger Weapons area which means more vertical launching system (VLS) system can be incorporated allowing it to carry nearly 24 6.5-tonne K-15/B-05 SLBM or 8 20-tonne K-4 SLBM with a maximum 5,000km-range and many Defence Analysts have predicted that Aridhaman will carry 12 K-15/B-05 SLBM and 4 K-4 SLBM in its Standard operational configurations so it can also provide right balance in conventional firepower when required .

Aridhaman will have similar 6 × 533 mm (21 in) torpedo tubes seen in Arihant but will have a larger capacity to carry more torpedoes in its armaments.

Sensors

Aridhaman will benefit from improvisation in many key sensors used in Arihant due to maturity of technology and will see improved ISS (Integrated Sonar Suite) along with USHUS sonar and next generation unified submarine sonar and tactical control system currently been developed by many DRDO labs in India.

While everyone is tight lipped about when INS Aridhaman will be ready and what is its current status, it can be assumed that next big thing to hit the Indian Ocean will see a tentative launch by 2018 and operation launch by 2022 into Indian Navy.

Where are people getting that's it's bigger, holds more SLBMs? Virtually nothing official regarding specs, or official renders were ever outted.

Slight increase in size and power was expected , but the moment these articles put the number 8 K4s, all becomes trash.

10 ruppee says that the K-15 has range of 1500 km and designed as a antiship bm and the K-4 has range of 4000km with MIRV.

I guess then the website is waste of bandwidth.

Nope.... same size with more weapons added

When was the official confirmation we got from Indian officials about Arihant itself ? And when was the project actually started.? These are rumours with serious sources. ... And its common sense that lots of changes needs to be carried out to fit inside pressurised enclosed space .

Surely some of the specs like 4 VLS, with multiple K15s in one VLS was given by naval, or DRDO officials.

Some giving by Saraswat himself.

But why do some sources claim, without citing nothing that a sub in the same class will be bigger, or will have more VLS. When they were designed and keeled relatively in similar dates?

That's why we have modification process for all new weapons. Take tejas for example. To fit in new powerful engine modification should be carried out from basic structure like airfram. Same goes for all weapon system. Only thing is cost matters. Aircrafts are very cheap compared to submarines. So we can't afford to have underpowered submarines just because we built one . These modifications need to be carried out from Keel, Hull , and capacity of pressure it can hold. Huge drawback with steam system is that when you want increase this lower output and so Large reactors more space required for better cooling and safety insulation. As normal mariner engineer myself I presume Naval nuclear or all nuclear reactors use steam turbine for power generation. . .

So of course we must seen major changes in size of Aridaman. And I guess that additional strength and space can be achieved has been utilized for four more silos. That's why I put Arihant as Pakistan centric and Aridaman as China centric. Next one could be as backup or reserve or as substitute for both when goes for maintenance. Massive development and achievement for any country even for super powers .

I have another doubt how many of our nirbay cruise missiles or bramos can fit inside Arihant class? Same like SSGN.
