Visit of Prime minister Narendra Modi to Russia carried a lot of expectation for Indian Air force which had hoped visit to could finally break the logjam in many long-pending Joint ventures which are refusing to take off due to the mutual difference between India and Russia.
News coming from Moscow on Indo-Russian 5th Generation fighter FGFA project is not much encouraging and IAF is pretty much furious about the lack of any development on the deal for last few years now.
Reports which are emerging in Indian Media reports indicate that India and Russia have again failed to find a breakthrough on talks of the development of PAK-FA 5th generation fighter jet and certain section even calling deal on Pak-FA collapsed indefinitely.
Indian Air Force which has been denied direct access to the plane and its technology by Russia. IAF is not buying Russian argument that all is well with the project even when Russian defence ministry recently reduced orders for Pak-Fa from 50 aircraft to less than 20 which will be inducted into Russian Airforce’s Test Squadron raising speculation if it will ever enter active operational squadrons in Russian Air force.
In Past Indian Air Force openly has criticised the project and termed Engine and Avionics offered in the aircraft has weak and not reached a level of maturity of a production standard. Russians negotiation team too are non-committal on the technology which Indian Air Force wants to incorporate in the Indian version of a 5th generation fighter jet leading to statement in the deal where India already has invested nearly Rs 1500 cr.
Russia still not has allowed Indian Test pilots access to the jet for evaluations and testing which has left IAF furious and non-commital on a jet which its own airforce (Russian) is not interested in procuring raising speculation on this capabilities.
Defence Analyst Ranesh Rajan speaking on the matter with idrw.org said that ” Many Airforce officials he spoke too are convinced that aircraft has not matured enough technologically to be termed as a 5th generation plane and Russians have simply run out of funds and steam to bring the project to its logical conclusion leading to speculations on claimed technical capabilities of the jets which repeatedly has been contested by IAF ” .
Without India order and funds Russian 5th generation project, the programme more or less is dead unlikely to be touched by any other current users of Sukhoi-27/30 which were seen as potential buyers for the jets said Defence Analyst Rajan.
