The Supreme Court has sought to know government’s stand on a plea challenging its plan to deport Rohingya refugees. India has for decades sheltered people fleeing conflict and disaster, though it is not signatory to any pacts obligating it to offer refuge. Here, a look at the Rohingyas’ desperate situation:

WHO ARE ROHINGYAS

1. Myanmar has not recognised the Rohingya among its 135 ethnic groups under a 1982 citizenship Act.

2. The Myanmar government terms them ‘Bengali’ to paint the Muslim minority in Rakhine state as recent migrants from Bangladesh.

3. In Myanmar, the word Rohingya is taboo.

ROHINGYAS IN NUMBERS

1. There are about 10 lakhs Rohingyas in Myanmar.

2. About 1.23 lakh have fled to Bangladesh since August 25.

3. There are abput 40,000 Rohingya in Jammu, Hyderabad, Delhi-NCR, Haryana, UP and Rajasthan.

INDIA HAS NO REFUGEE LAW

1. India is not a signatory to 1951 UN refugee convention, or its 1967 Protocol

2. The government decides asylum pleas on ad hoc and case-to-case basis

3. Asylum-seekers whose plea is okayed are given long-term visa (LTV) to be renewed annually

4. Long-term visa gives them right to work in private sector and access to education and banking

BUT, INDIA HAS OPENED ITS DOORS TO REFUGEES

1. Tibetans, the Chakmas of Bangladesh, Afghans and ethnic Tamil from Sri Lanka are among those given refuge in India.

2. Tibetans (about 1L) got asylum. Can take land on lease and seek jobs in the private sector

3. Tamil refugees, mostly in Tamil Nadu, numbering about a lakh get state government aid

4. In 2016, the Modi government allowed Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan to buy property for self-living, obtain driving licences, receive PAN and Aadhaar IDs, etc.

WHY GOVT PLANS TO DEPORT ROHINGYAS

MoS Home Kiren Rijiju has said India wants to deport all illegal immigrants even those with UNHCR papers because…

1. Immigrants are susceptible to recruitment by “terror” groups

2. They “not only infringe on rights of Indian citizens but also pose grave security challenges”

3. Influx of migrants also leads to social, political and cultural problems

4. The idea to “ensure the demographic pattern of India is not disturbed”

THERE’S A PROBLEM IN DEPORTING ROHINGYAS

1. India has said it is talking with Bangladesh and Myanmar about deportation.

2. Myanmarese laws have rendered Rohingyas stateless, hence they are left with no ‘home’ to return to.

UN URGES INDIA TO FOLLOW ‘CUSTOMARY LAW’

1. The ‘principle of nonrefoulement’ is binding on all states whether they have signed UN’s refugee convention or not 2. The customary law says refugees cannot be forcibly returned to a place where they face persecution or threats to their life or freedom.

SC TO HEAR PLEA ON DEPORTATION OF ROHINGYAS

The government’s plan was challenged in SC, the next hearing is on September 11.

We already have a huge influx of illegal Bangladeshis and we're overburdened with population. Unless our infrastructure and economy improves significantly, these Rohingyas would be a pain in the arse for our govt

India is a great nation, it has sheltered refugees running from prosecution for centuries.
I think we should offer our helping hand to the rohingyas, they will not forget this gratitude.

Although our experience with Bangladesh seems to counter the above argument.

So you think.

Like I said; you need to research about them before commenting rather than posting one liners. There is a reason why other countries are apprehensive of getting them here.

Rohingyas have already sounded off dangerous alarm bells according to Indian intelligence reports.

They are not welcome here.

After Mahabodhi blasts, they are clearly a threat to India.

Here:

Migration from the Indian subcontinent to Myanmar (formerly Burma) had taken place for centuries, including as part of the spread of Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam in the region. The historical region of Bengal (now divided between Bangladesh and the Indian state of West Bengal) has historical and cultural links with Rakhine State (formerly Arakan). Bengali-speaking settlers are recorded in Arakan since at least the 17th century,[38] when the Kingdom of Mrauk U reigned. The term Rohingya, in the form of Rooinga, was recorded by the East India Company as early as 1799, but Burmese nationalists dispute its origins.[39] Indian migration increased during the period of British rule in Burma, as Burma was a part of British India until 1937.[40] Arakan had the largest percentage of British Indians in Burma.[41] British Indians in Arakan were involved in agricultureand trade. Their presence was resented by many in the Rakhine majority.[42]

During World War II, the Arakan massacres in 1942 involved communal violence between British-armed V Force Rohingya recruits and pro-Japanese Rakhines, polarizing the region along ethnic lines.[43] In 1936 and 1939, several Arakanese Indians like Gani Markan were elected to the Legislative Council of Burma under the Burmese native category in British Burma. After Burmese independence in 1948, Rohingya leaders held high ranking positions in the Burmese government and parliament.[44] In 1948, M. A. Gaffar sought official recognition for the Rohingya as one of Burma's ethnic groups. One of Burma's first two female legislators, Zura Begum, was elected by Rohingyas in 1951. In 1960, Sultan Mahmudproposed a separate province for the Rohingyas. Discrimination against minorities increased after the 1962 Burmese coup d'état. In 1982, General Ne Win's government enacted the Burmese nationality law, which did not recognize the Rohingya as one of the eight "national races" and stripped the citizenship rights of the Rohingya.[1] In the years following the 8888 Uprising and return of martial law, the Burmese military junta launched a military crackdown against Rohingyas in 1991 and 1992, which caused 250,000 refugees to flee to neighboring Bangladesh and brought the two countries to the brink of war.[45][46]

why ?

THIS IS WHY !!!

A Myanmar newspaper has pointed out a link between Pakistan and the radical group ISIS for the latest wave of violence in Rakhine State that resulted in a fresh influx of Rohingya refugees into Bangladesh.

the intelligence intercepted three long-duration calls between Hafiz Tohar, military wing chief of Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) on Aug 23 and 24,

Hafiz Tohar set up the Aqa Mul Mujahideen (AMM) and was trained in Pakistan by the dreaded Lashkar e Tayyaba (LET) after he was recruited by Abdul Qadoos Burmi, the chief of Harkat ul Jihad al Islami -Arakan (HUJI-A) from Kyauk Pyin Siek village of Maungdaw in 2014," according to the report.

Following the training of a few initial recruits of the AMM in Pakistan, new cadres were recruited from among Rohingya youths in Rakhine and refugee camps in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazaar.

One "Major Salamat" of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence, deputed for undercover operations with the LET, was responsible for these training during April-May 2016, according to the report.

No reason we should accept them.
1. They are not our neighbors
2. They will be better suited in a muslim country like BD
3. They will disturb the delicate social fabric our north east currently has
4. They are not of Indian descent

Yes, we are small hearted, plz take them all. Shower all greatness you want ,we don't need these people.
The large heartedness of Pakistanis resulted in the amalgamation of Bangladesh into Pakistan (east) in 1971. East Pakistan is a happy place today

History bears witness to the fate of nations with a high level of tolerance. It's not nice
