thats right there are diffrent jets fro diffrent jobs but in todays world the trend is of multi role or omni role fighter and tejas is the most compact and lightest multi role fighter jet in its class with a decent payload and combat radius and a very good radar and avionics package which is already in for a major upgrade with AESA GaN based radar and combined and compact next gen AESA based certralised /Digital with DATALINK EW+ECM+Jammer +avionics suite and all the things like OBOGS , IFR and internal IRST and all this at almost half the rates of any european equivelenet like grippen who happen to have almost a 50 years lead in making aircrafts and allied sub systemsActually IAF does not depend on teajas only,It try to its best to purchase world's #1 qulity Air crafts.
also dont forget entire cost of LCA project with entire R&D costs and costs in procurment of machinerry and spares and sub systems and engines or avonics or weapons or building 16+ prototypes costed just over 2.2 billion dollars tell me one developing nation which achived so much after starting from sratch
