Almost all the major military powers in this world are having or working on strategic/dedicated bomber aircraft but not India. Since India is already working with Russia in PAK-FA project better called the FGFA, it would have been a good choice to also join the Russians in there effort to make the next gen strategic bomber aircraft PAK-DA.

US - US has many bombers in it's inventory such as B-1B Lancer, B-2A Spirit & B-52H Stratofortress, it is also working on next generation bomber which is scheduled to be inducted in 2020s.

Russia - Again Russia has many bombers like Tupolev Tu-22M, Tupolev Tu-95 & Tupolev Tu-160 it is working on stealth bomber called PAK-DA.

China - The PLAAF has around 120 Xian H-6 strategic bombers in it's inventory & plans to induct more types of bombers in the future.

This leaves only IAF out of big league of military powers having strategic/dedicated bombers.

About PAK-DA:

PAK DA (or PAK-DA), is a next generation strategic bomber which is being developed by Russia. It stands for Perspektivnyi Aviatsionnyi Kompleks Dalney Aviatsyi which means Future Air Complex for Strategic Air Forces. The PAK DA is going to be heavily based on Russia’s current supersonic bomber Tupolev Tu-160 and is expected to have it’s maiden flight by 2015. and enter service by 2020-25 time frame . The few details released to date about the design include a combat radius of around 3,500 kilometers, a loaded weight of 100 to 120 tons, and the possible use of some equipment from the Sukhoi PAK FA project such as avionics and engines.

I wonder why doesn't IAF goes for a strategic bomber like PAK-DA??

Right now, it's nothing more than an idea even in Russia.............
Once the concept solidifies, I expect us to join the project, even if the only contribution is funding.............:agree:

Why doesn't India join Russian PAK-DA project??

Because they haven't invited India or nor does India has the option to join any projects on its own will.

I hope that if we make a request to the Russians they will not say no to it.

We will buy off the shelf in the next decade. Let Russia do the Work :D

then how will we get the technological know how which we want very desperately

. .
Any way we paid for development costs for Mig29k and will pay for PAKFA that would be more than $4 billion . Just buying 50 such aircrafts would be a good deterrence for our enemies . No need to waste our money on R & D .

.
Because fuel is costly and it has 4 engines....so cant afford..let the iran mess to be resolved then we will see :enjoy:

The days of needing huge fleets of strategic bombers is over- today an MKI can carry a significantly smaller (in tonnage terms) payload but cause vastly more damage than a bomber from WWII/Vietnam/Cold War. MKIs and Rafales can also be used in the nuclear strike role and are more competent at this role as they are small, nimble high speed a/c unlike lumbering bombers who present huge targets to enemy air defence. In short this sort of asset is very out dated and not the best one to have in your arsenal in future wars.

Also from what I hear the PAK-DA is having its own problems in terms of funding and lack of any real interest from RuAF and the project could become yet another ambitious failure for Russia.

but then why major powers like US & Russia still going for it, they are making it more stealthier etc.

The heavy bombers are strategic forces and no countries do not sell their latest heavy bombers. Heck, B52 almost 60 years old and US still have not sell 1 to a foreign country. So India is not going to be able to purchase the PAK-DA, let along join the project.

USA and Russia have adversaries halfway across the world, and fighters don't have the range to go that far. India's adversaries are near its borders, and we don't need long range strategic bombers. MKIs and rafales can do the same job, cost a fraction as large bombers, and are much less vulnerable to enemy air defences.

India and Russia share a special relationship......
They are already in joint developement with India for their primary 5G fighter...
And if India asked they wouldn't mind us in their bombers too....

the question is do IAF want it or not in the first place, I don't know if Russia will let India join in the project or not, but surely Russia can sell it to India as bombers like Tupolevs are operated by IN & Russia have also sold bombers to China in the past.
