Why do many Chinese believe that Western democracy is a plot to make China weak?
In my opinion, American style democracy would definitively be a step backwards for China.

“Democracy is the rule of the mediocre by the incompetent” The majority of voters are of below average intelligence and they put people in power who are like them.

Most of the elected representatives in the American Congress would not even make it into the lower ranks of the National People’s Congress of China. (There are only 3 people with a STEM qualification in the 435 member House of Representatives in America)

Only 3 of these people have a STEM qualification!

You will end up like America with a woefully under-educated population.

That is only when politicians get their hands on people's money. To achieve that, they spend years to convince people that it is for the good of people, while it is really for the good of the politicians.

Both democracy and authoritarianism are founded on grandiosity. For democracy, it is self-grandiosity, in which a person who barely leaves his adolescence and hardly can choose his/her mate well, is given the power to choose a member of the government. For authoritarianism, it is centralized grandiosity, which focus on the head of the regimen, like ancient monarchies and modern communistic countries.

Once someone figures this out, he can play right into it to get the best for himself while leaving the host baffled.

Unfortunately, grandiosity is the necessity for a human society to function and last. It is the key ingredient to suppress the dissent.
