Simple answer. The defending aircraft usually take off in pairs or the CAPs are conducted in pairs. When faced with an incoming strike package, the numbers are always off. You don't need to match the aircraft in numbers.

In the case of Indian ingress, they claimed to have had 12 Mirages against 6 PAF fighters which forced them to egress prematurely after hastily unloading their munitions.

They knew if they used more, chances of loosing alot of fighters was there.

We would have seen more than 3 aircraft shot down in indian occupied kashmir.

We still use F-7 PG upgraded ones as interceptors.
Basically same aircraft.
