Why did Daw Aung San Suu Kyi visit China?

I would say Suu Kyi is not pro-west, but pro-realistic.
While the Myanmar military government is playing pro-west game, argue with China for more benefit.

The west will usually say a lot for you but will not do something for you.
While China do invest a lot in
I think why China invite Suu Kyi is below two.
1 warning the military government that China have other choice rather than only rely on them.
2 setup early relationship with Suu Kyi. In case of Suu Kyi coming into power, this kind of early relationship will reduce much conflicts in the change over.

I find this encouraging. China had to swallow a lot of pride in inviting a politician that has been less than restrained when talking about China in the past. It's quite interesting that they would deal with a pro-West politician when dealing with Myanmar but flex their military muscle when dealing with the SCS question.

For what it's worth, I hope we go ahead with much of China's infrastructure projects but with the proviso that the benefits to the people of Myanmar comes first in any feasibility studies. I also hope that Naypyidaw continues with its non-aligned policy of international diplomacy. We will remain a friend to all.

I would say she is more realistic. rather than nationalistic or over pro-west.
She try to balance among different power group, like the west and China, military government, public .
She is from west style family.
But clear she keep certain distance with west to gain support from nationalistic public, like on Rohingya issue.
Also she setup relationship with China, which may help her a lot in future.
And even for military government, she is not taking aggressive action to cause potential conflict.
She is well balanced.

She is infact an MP in the upper house and as such she is indeed holding office having won a by-election in 2012.

I do agree with the latter point that she is very much pro-Myanmar first and is why I have come to respect and support her more in the last few years rather than when she was a poster-girl of NGO's. It is very apparent that she has leveraged her goodwill with Western governments, George Soros and democracy activists to cement her place in the local political picture. It was a very shrewd move and it I get a sense of glee seeing her snub a lot of these do gooder useful idiots who had placed her on a pedestal and called for badly thought out sanctions in the past. She has very much evolved from an Oxford academic to a seasoned politician.

Very true, Jon Snow, balance is indeed an effective tactic in the Game of Thrones IRL. I for one am very confident that the China-Myanmar partnership will remain strong in the future and both sides profit from mutual cooperation, especially since Myanmar became an AIIB founding member.
Thank you, Ser Bronn of the Blackwater.
