Who's to blame for Pakistan's 1971 Debacle?

Distance, we couldn't supply our troops or send reinforcements

Bengali were traitor's who should never be forgotten

The Hindus are cowards but it gave them a easy run at battlefield we couldn't possibly defend and the Bengalis deserve condemnation for this

Bengalis were an important part of the Pakistan movement. Their contribution cannot be denied or reduced regardless of what happened in 1971.

The imposition of Urdu was a cultural affront to Bengalis, who were proud of their language. This started the ball rolling on East Pakistan grievance against West Pakistan.

Pakistan not accepting the election results that make Mujiber Rehman PM on Pakistan was the straw that broke the camel's back.

You can blame Indians as cowards or whatever, but they took advantage of a situation that Pakistan created.

We were incompatible. (Period).
What Bengalis did during the Pakistan movement is irrelevant.
Indian Muslims supported the Pakistan movement. Does that give that "gentleman" from Mukka Chowk the right to break Pakistan?
The Bengali Nationalism ( Bangla Jatiyobad) was a narrow parochial movement only for the Musolmani Bangalis , which infiltrated the pan - cultural Pakistan movement to establish a state solely for the Muslim Bengalis.
The Bangladeshis committed a communal holocaust of Hindu Bengalis in Noakhali 1946, and the bloody Direct Action in Kolkata. This brought global condemnation upon the Pakistan movement. Vengeance from the Hindus was not long in coming, The Muslims of Bihar paid the price in a communal slaughter of even greater magnitude where the slogan in Bihar was.
خون کا بدلہ خون سےلیگیں
نواکھالیُ کابدلہ لیگیں
The carnage in Bihar was condemned by the British Parliament as an Armenian Tragedy.
The Musolmani Bengali couldn't care less about the consequences of their actions. They had their land.

But the wheel has turned full circle. The Bangladeshis have met their match in Modi and BJP ruled governments in every state except West Bengal that lies on their borders,. It is a matter of time that West Bengal will be ruled by the BJP. The bhadralok will then have their final revenge.

Sndhi/punjabi rulers/generals were also traitors as well.
The only true leader were liaquat ali khan and Jinnah
There is a difference.,
Sindhi/Punjabi/Baluch/KPK , and the army had their share of traitors. When found, these were arrested and punished. They were not lionized as heroes by their ethnic provincial brethren and least of all an enemy power.
No other person from any other provincial group actively collaborated with the enemy to support the secession of our territory.
In retrospect Mujib da ( brother in Bengali) did us a favor.

But most Pakistani people's opinion about BD is as follows:

Good riddance.

rights or no right good or bad they will have to go one day and india have to take benefit . its was wrong plan from day one . today after 73 years of pakistan are we able to mobilize troops to that place rapidly in case of war ? no we are nor . just 5 years ago we got air to air refueling we have 20 c-130s and 4 il-78s . can we do it ? no we can not do it . only way we were able to defend it if it have border with china .

lets say bengalis were not traitors but are we able to defend that land even today ? answer is no .

it was mistake of 1947 which was corrected ugly way in 1971 . they were not pakistani from day one .

I read somewhere about Mountbatten's now disclosed personal diary in which he was surprised that Jinnah accepted a Pakistan in such a state, basically he wanted to be the Viceroy of both India and Pakistan and hence presented an impossible to accept plan to Jinnah, who very surprisingly accepted and thus was born East and West Pakistan.

That is because most of the Pakistanis are led to believe that Bengalis were born traitors. And unfortunately, most of the Pakistanis believe that lie.

this could be reason baba ji accepted it because once English go plan for free pakistan will be dead . see sikhs and others failed , baba accepted this mess so he can have pakistan .

Polity of Pakistan Movement is safer in Bengal than Punjab and Sindh.

Jinnah secured the western part as eastern was inevitable.

It's not his problem if 70 Years later the opposite is attributed to him.

Bhutto is the architect of Pak-China friendship when your generals where sitting in American lap & quite happy there, he had predicted during the Cold War period that a third power centre will emerge from the developing world & that country will be China , he made a case for friendship with China as foreign minister & you are reaping its benefits today. He is also the one who showed political will to build nuke because India did, your generals had agreed to shelve it on American pressure but Bhutto continued it, he was not some army rubber stamp like your current PM Imran Khan, he was highly educated and man with vision. Today the two main trump card for you against India is nuclear capability & Chinese friendship.
A great post overflowing with facts although you need not take a dig at PMIK. Nawaz was greater rubber stamp then any other but leaving that asides Bhutto senior was instrumental in creating the strategic power that Pakistan wields today on accont of -

if anybody in Pakistan deserves the title of "father of Pakistan nukes" it was Bhutto. For the millionth time it was "Bhutto". There should come a time that a nuke missile delivery system needs to be named "Bhutto". This positive Bhutto bestowed on Pakistan is greater than any other leader Pakistan as had other than possibly Ayub Khan.

the other lesser but very important strategic advantage Pakistan has is China which no doubt Bhutto was also instrumental. Our lot could not look beyond the West in those days and pork snorting athiest Chinese were not exactly on top of everybodies mind, certainly not the mullahs like the one many worship - Maudoodi.

Bhutto really gets a bad wrap in Pakistan. Maybe one day a more balanced view of him will take root. No leader is pretty 100% of the time. All have skeletons in the closet but that does not mean that Pakistan should wash a record of a leader who gave it so much. Bhutto was a genious even if flawed as often men like that are.

Part of the reason he is used as toilet paper to clean all the sh*t stains in Pakistan is he managed to create a array of opposition that combined to bring him down. Most of these were right wing groups which even now hold so much power. Some of the groups who rllied against him -

  • Karachi urban class - these were mostly Mohajir groups who used religion to gouge the resources of thew state. Bhuttos Sindhi language issue and nationalisation made him bitter enemies who have not forgiven him nearly 5 decades later. This group was critical in bringing Bhutto down.

  • the mullah class who were slowly gaining influence in 1970s rallied around the [1] and pushed Bhutto into the corner.

  • the Americans who could not stand a left leaning maverick who was begining to act like a socialist demagogue and blew smoke up the Yanl nose by openly going for nukes "or eat grass".

All these forces combined and Zia knowing USA [possibly got even a wink] would turn a blind eye went for the coup and rest is history. So in summary. No Bhutto was not cause of 1971 fiasco it was the Pakistan civil/military/political elite who enabled this to happen.

Today powerful media and groups keep the myth alive of Bhutto did this and that and giving credit for nukes to such people as Qadeer Khan etc

Yes exactly , very well written. A leader should be remembered for both his good and bad. I sympathise with him the same way I sympathise for Narsimha Rao of how people of my country forgot him after so much good work on economy, but his fate was still better than that of Bhutto. Masses in our part of the world are quite dumb, even in the age of internet they don’t try to understand these leaders & their personality, they blindly believe what is feed to them by the groups you mentioned in your post, it’s like they have predetermined & made up in their mind that he was the main villain.

The breakup happened almost half a century ago, much longer then the time the two nations were United. It is for the best both went their separate ways. BDs future is tied with India while Pakistans is with China.
We are two separate nations, peoples and cultures. Good luck to both.

Yeah Imran Khan is not educated from Oxford at all lol

Who said Idhar Tum Idhar Hum? Who said he will break legs if someone went to Dhaka? Who called Bengalis son of pigs? Was it army?

You don't know anything about Bhuttos role in breakup of Pakistan. He never accepted his defeat in 1970 elections. He wanted break up of Pakistan so he could become PM
