Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday conducted interviews for the post of Azad Jammu and Kashmir prime minister after Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) emerged as the single-largest party in the recently held polls in the region, ARY News reported.

According to details, Prime Minister Imran Khan chaired a meeting here in Islamabad to discuss matters pertaining to forming the next government in AJK and the nomination of the new prime minister in AJK.

After the session, PM Khan held separate meetings with former AJK PM Barrister Sultan Mahmood Chaudhry, veteran politician Sardar Tanveer Ilyas, Khawaja Farooq and Azhar Sadiq.

During the meeting, PM asked several questions from candidates and discussed topics related to education, health, development, agriculture. PM also asked about their priorities related to Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

Sources say that former AJK prime minister Barrister Sultan Mehmood and Sardar Tanveer Ilyas are favourite for the AJK PM’s post.

Former Prime Minister Sultan Mahmood is a veteran Kashmiri leader, who had been elected to the AJKLA multiple times like his father the late Chaudhry Noor Hussain. Sultan Mahmood joined the PTI in 2015. He also heads the AJK chapter of the PTI. In 2016, he was routed by his traditional challenger from his native Mirpur constituency. He defeated PML-N candidate in 2021 elections.

Tanveer Ilyas became formally associated with the PTI only after he was given its ticket for the Bagh seat. He defeated PPP candidate Sardar Ziaul Haq on LA-15 Bagh-II seat

Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) secured a clear majority in elections on 45 general seats of 53-member Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly.

According to unofficial results, PTI won in 25 constituencies, followed by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) in 11 constituencies and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz in six constituencies.

I personally feel Barrister sultan Mehmood would be a good choice. With decades of political struggle behind him and many personal contacts in world parliaments, he is an ideal choice. The overseas diaspora will really welcome this, especially those who have marched with him on numerous occasions in London(including me). On the contrary, Tanvir Ilyas has already become controversial with many videos surfacing on the net.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan has started interviews of candidates for the slot of Azad Jammu and Kashmir prime minister in which they are being asked for their future strategy and views on environment, tourism and national and international issues.

However, uncertainty prevails as to who will be the next AJK premier as the list of probables continues to swell.

On the first day on Thursday, the prime minister interviewed five candidates — Sardar Tanveer Ilyas, Barrister Sultan Mehmood, Khawaja Farooq, Azhar Sadiq and Abdul Qayyum Niazi. Mr Niazi was not earlier in the run for the PM slot, but his name came to the fore suddenly.

Three to four candidates will be interviewed on Friday (today) and Mr Khan it is expected to announce the name of new AJK premier before Aug 5.

Five aspirants call on PM, three to four will meet today
A source said Prime Minister Khan expressed displeasure as he was being contacted by different quarters for “support and favour” for particular candidates, but he told the aspirants that he would take his own decision without any pressure.

“Yes, the prime minister has started interviews of candidates and now no one can be called himself as most favourite one,” Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry told Dawn. He said four to five candidates for the office of AJK premier met Mr Khan on Thursday and almost the same number of people would meet him on Friday.

“The prime minister is taking lengthy interviews of the candidates in which he is asking questions about environment, tourism, economy, border issues and their future plans,” he added.

Fawad Chaudhry said the spadework for the formation of AJK government had started after the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf won majority seats in the recent elections. He said PM Khan would also finalise the names of the president and speaker and deputy speaker of the AJK Legislative Assembly.

The source said that after the meeting with the prime minister, the body language of both Sardar Tanveer and Sultan Mehmood appeared to be “dull” which indicated that some other candidates were also being seriously considered.
