Which air defense system is the best?

Which air defense system is the best?

True.

SM-6 is really close to providing capability against a wide range of threats though - a true marvel of engineering.
I wrote in a different but unrelated thread that no hardware can save the air space if it is in the hands of corrupt government and military who are susceptible to bribery. They can provide even as little as 15 minutes of hostile windows to adversaries. There are real examples but that may embrass a lot of people who claim to be patriots.

The Force propaganda is strong with the Russians. Take Russian CLAIMS for public domain with CAUTION - always.

Coming back to the Ground Midcourse Defense (GMD):-

GMD has a transcontinental footprint (i.e. SENSOR ARCHITECTURE).

Homeland-Defense-Assets.jpg

GMD class interceptors are 3-stage solid fuel ICBM types, located in the US mainland at present, covering entire North America - enormous coverage by any measure.

Russian S-500 battery covers a CITY or a DISTRICT at most. Therefore, absurd comparison.
And you're looks like inspired by US propaganda,, Russian have different strategies then USA, they have over the horizon radar with a range of thousand of kilometers, which can guide these interceptors to its extreme ranges and who knows what kind of secret other ABM systems used by Russia

PATRIOT has more kills then any current air-defense system by far. PAC-2 is losing some effectiveness faced with more modern threats, but PAC-3, with a range near equal to S-400 against aircraft, has become one of the most lethal S2A missiles with numerous successful interceptions in combat.

THAAD is a missile defense system, it isn't for defending against aircraft or cruise missiles, but ballistic missiles. Same as SM-3.

SM-6 is the best all-round up missile. It has capabilities against cruise and ballistic missiles, air-breathing targets (heloes and aircraft) and can be used in an anti-ship or land-attack role.

Russian missiles are good for shooting down passenger airliners and being bombed to pieces by the Americans and Israelis. S-400 for instance has zero combat interceptions. PATRIOT has hundreds.
Iron Dome is the most combat prove defense system world-wide, not patriot

True.

And the SM-6 is about to get significantly more lethal with the introduction of the SM-6 Block 1b. The Block 1b replaces the 13.5in SM-6 Block 1a rocket motor with a 21in rocket motor for the 1b. Its range and speed upgrade will be huge! We're probably looking at a 350-500 mile engagement range for the 1b.

Do you pay attention to provided information, or you want to argue for the sake of argue? I disregard propaganda from any source, and I have studied technologies in great detail since the 1990s.

Russia is not a PEER of USA in technology-related matters [like this or not].

S-500 offers REGIONAL ballistic missile defense capability much like American THAAD and Israeli Arrow 3.

"S-500s would be ideal for providing regional ballistic missile defense along Russia’s European borders with NATO. It is in many ways roughly analogous to the U.S.-made Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system, or THAAD, though the goal is clearly to offer flexibility to respond to more conventional aerial threats, as well." - Joseph Trevithick (2018)

S-500 is equipped with following interceptors.

  • 77N6-N
  • 77N6-N1

Confirmed range = 600 KM*
Confirmed ceiling = 100 KM**

*Confirmed via testing.

"According to the anonymous individuals, the S-500 was able to hit a target just shy of 300 miles away, which is some 50 miles further than the previous record. The stated range of the existing S-400 system when using the 40N6 missile is almost 250 miles."

**Confirmed by Russian developer Almaz-Antey.

"Earlier this week, Pavel Sozinov, chief engineer of the Russian defense corporation Almaz-Antey, said that Russia's next-generation S-500 surface-to-air missile system would be able to engage targets in the upper layer of the atmosphere, 100 kilometers [62 miles] above the Earth's surface."

GMD offers CONTINENTAL ballistic missile defense capability - the only type in the world.

"First operationally fielded in 2004, GMD and its associated elements today span 15 time zones, including two Ground-based Interceptor (GBI) sites at Ft. Greely, Alaska and Vandenberg AFB, California, seven types of sensors, and various command and control systems." - CSIS

GMD is equipped with re-engineered 3-stage solid fuel ICBM class interceptors.

GMD interceptors are so huge that they are positioned in relevant SILO just like ICBM.

"GMD is designed expressly to counter long-range, intercontinental class ballistic missiles which threaten the U.S. homeland. It uses a three-stage booster, giving the necessary range and divert capability to perform intercepts over a greater distance. This range in turn gives GMD the greatest coverage area of any U.S. system, defending all fifty states. Other missile defense systems, including Aegis, THAAD, and Patriot, are generally described as “regional” systems, and are tailored more toward short or intermediate range ballistic missile threats. While elements of these systems may have homeland defense applications, they have significantly much smaller coverage areas than GMD." - CSIS

These are just assessment by US/EU intelligence agencies, which could be wrong, most of S-500 technologies are classified and this source are western could be propaganda against Russia/S-500 no body knows what is the real capabilities of S-500 because S-500 in in developmental stages,
And tell me why USA had been want to put GMD in Europe if it had a transcontinental ranges in late 90s/early 2000???

ABSOLUTELY WRONG. Recheck my post.

US does not want to plant GMD interceptors in Europe. Very simple.

Yes they tried to plant GMD on Poland and Czechoslovakia in early 2000, but because of protest from Russia they back off their plan to plant GMD in Eurpoe

This is correct.

US have fielded powerful missile defense applications in Poland (AEGIS ASHORE), Romania (AEGIS ASHORE; THAAD), Turkey (AN/TPY-2), and Israel (THAAD) at present - these sensor systems can provide cues to GMD.

However, GMD interceptors will not be provided to Europe.

SECONDLY:-

1. US have GLOBAL surveillance capabilities; NSA is known to observe countless infrared events on the ground - around the world - via constellations of powerful satellites orbiting Earth. Russia (and/or any country) cannot conceal missile-related experiments from NSA - nobody cares by the way.

2. Russian company Almaz-Antey (developer of advanced Russian Air Defense systems such as S-300, S-400 and S-500) has provided some information about S-500 system and its capabilities in the public domain. Refer back to my post # 22 above.
