Before the annexation of the Crimean federal district, Russia was 28 times the size of Ukraine. Ukraine is 21 times the size of the Crimean federal district which Russia annexed in 2014. This is a huge loss for Ukraine, a way bigger loss than Syria's loss of most of Golan which Israel annexed in 1981. Israel and Syria still hate each other to this day.

Why should Ukraine give up the Crimean federal district? China never gave up Taiwan. Heck, Syria never gave up Hatay which was annexed by Turkey in 1939. Syria and Turkey still hate each other to this day.

No country gives up any territory to any other country unless under VERY extraordinary circumstances. In 2008 Russia gave 174 sq km 1.5 islands in the Amur river to China to settle all territorial disputes with China plus it was mainly because China complained about the islands obstructing China's shipping in the Amur river.

The US would have to fight a war against Russia. The result would be millions of US soldiers dead and Crimea would still be part of Russia. It would be Crimea War 2, way more brutal than Crimea War 1.
