What is the difference and why are they given these names?
  • A church is a Christian place of worship
  • A cathedral is a church that contains the seat of a bishop
  • A monastery was a building complex occupied by a community of monks
they do not look the same, Cathedrals are generally bigger and grander and when monasteries existed they had homesteads (small farms)

difference between church and cathedral could be a bit like your masjid and jamiah masjid

Thanks for the lovely post. But when I look at the Notre Dame or the Sacre Coeur I see a curch. Or I get the impression that these are churches but in fact both are cathedrals where people can bow to Jesus and pray.
Also seen some very small monestaries in France and Italy and they too had public access for praying. It's all very confusing for a non christian.

I don't know much (almost nothing) about France or Italy but our monasteries were destroyed long time ago. I have never seen anything but ruins which are preserved as public parks and gardens

Thank you Henry VIII.

And why was this important? By chaining the church, purging the priests and erasing the monks it set England for the age of reason and science. Progress followed with enlightenment and the seeds of a superpower were laid. Britain would go on to become a global superpower and conquer 3/5 of the world.

Beautiful but it looks abandoned right? :what:
it is a public park, a garden and a small museum. staffed by a curator and 7 or so gardeners (quite a few roads run through the grounds)

it has no roof, many buildings have vanished but whatever remains, is preserved hence can't deteriorate any further

So many of these wonderful structures are destroyed or damaged, it's almost a crime.

Offtopic: As a kid I was scared of watching this videoclip but the destroyed monestery intrigued me even as a child. And ofcource the music is briliant.

monasteries were destroyed in 1500s. UK became rich after East India Company was founded in December 1600 (decades after Henry viii destruction of Catholicism). he did not abolish religion or priesthood but created a new church and clergy making himself the head.

Opposite to what British governments do for Muslims : support mullahs and preserve regressive ideas, thereby preventing Muslims in becoming a power bloc.
