Rise of a powerful nation required a strong leadership to guide a nation (and the people) to the next level. Few example in Asia including Japan and China. A strong nation will have make some sacrifition to achieve the advanced status. Democratic system on the surface is insufficient. If people want to change, start from themselves, society and the whole nation.

Government is also part of the people. Your government is not killing your own people, but put some restriction on them. Some changes can be initiated within the society, you don't have to depend on gov on everything. If the people are dumb, always look at everything in short term interest, good luck.
