The last paragraph is ominous indeed:

QUOTE: "Make no mistake. The elite and middle class in Pakistan will not be able to continue to enjoy the perks even in the relative safety of their gated communities. If the poor continue to be marginalised for education and nutrition, the resulting chaos will be far worse than what one finds in today’s Pakistan. The least one can expect from the political and intellectual elite of Pakistan is to focus on what threatens the welfare of citizens. It’s not cricket. It’s illiteracy and malnutrition. If the elite can’t get this right, their education has been all for naught." /QUOTE

And as expected, over 200 views and not a peep or comment from the chest thumping flag waving crowds. :D

What is current governments policy on education? I never heard anything during election from any of party in their manifesto.

Looks like priorities are messed up for both GOP and people of Pakistan. Taliban is not only killing people by bomb blast but bigger harm it is bringing by deviating public focus from more core issues like education. In past I had seen very less people on forum are interested in contributing to post related to education. But they will jump of some speculative thread about Iran or Syria or about metro.

In India when government was not ready to pay attention to education, 100s of NGO came to help. They are doing excellent job with great efficiency and their outcome has inspired more people to do same. Right now major contribution for NRIs to charity in India goes to education and health care related NGOs. Is there anything like is going on in Pakistan.

Well, education in Pakistan is a very serious issue which has never been taken seriously!

Sadly, all politicians are interested in are an illiterate, uninformed, dependent population which will not be able to stand/ think or act without someone ordering it about...

As long as that stays, we will continue to have stupid leaders as our population is made of very simple minded and extremely crooked people....Where the crooked cheat and exploit the simple minded due to the lack of education- knowledge would be a better word....or the sense to think..

Education is the only way for most of the people to rise in social/wealth ladder . If that is taken away from them right at the time of primary school they will never realize what they are loosing until its too late .

Long term effect of neglecting Children's education is chaos and thats what we see in Pakistan. Zia was angel sent from heaven to wage Jihad but no education, Musharaf's Era was a golden era of economic progress yet no education for half of our population. So whose fault is it, Govt's who is chosen by us or Ours who choose them.

Regardless of whose fault it is, what does it say about the future of a nation when it cannot even get together to educate its own children?

Its not regardless, this is one of the issue that voters needs to tell their politician that it matters the most. None of the political parties had education as their top priority, and those of us who are concerned about the future of this country must pressurize their politician to make this their top issue.

Only government is not responsible for these kind of issues. . . .civil society should also be blamed eueally. . . .govt. can make policies . . .provide funds and facilities. . . but its the people who needs to make full use of it. . . . . education starts at home first .

May i ask, in Pakistan do ordinary parents push privately for education much?

In BD, i have noticed in the last decade that there is a sort of 'trend' for education. Hundreds of private education institutions have popped up in this time and it seems no self-respecting parent can afford not to have their child taking extra-curricular learning.

I think all South Asians have a similar competitive side in their social circles, where parents are always trying to outdo each other. Do you think this will happen in Pakistan if the spark hits or is it a bygone thought?
