What it's like to work in a Chinese mega-factory, according to a student who spent 6 weeks there

The point of the article as written by a Chinese undercover student is to show the working conditions in Apple's factories are not in line with their espoused work rules. These rules were supposedly implemented years ago after they were shown to be exploitative of workers. Even though Apple representatives are on the premises they seem to be looking the other way.

If you want to stand behind Apple and agree that these people are just unimportant workers then that is your call.
for disggusting and twisted propagandist it is easy to find the 'source' or 'under covered' person providing sources with good pocket money. and the funny part is that its universal thing in Chinese factories that you are not forced to work over time, as what western propaganda like to paint, the more you work the more you get paid, thats it!

basically there are so many basic errors on this twisted report, at one point they said they were 'forced' to work 12 hours lol, and the fact is that they didnt tell you that includes breakfest, lunch, and break times which are hours. on top of that most factories they do run over 12 hours per day, but it goes with two shifts, aka early and late shift. Like all the shops in London they all have 2 shifts, I guess they are all violating human rights too according to that nutcase?

Well he was a Chinese national doing an undercover project. If he was lying to discredit Apple then I guess he had some agenda. Maybe he should have went to a Huawei plant.

read all the questions, they are all seem dodgy and intentional. again with good money and exposure there are people would do anything.
Thats what western media does, the tricks are too blunt and obvious to me```but most of you lot are buying it :hang2:

He would have found better examples of "human rights violations" in Japanese companies in Japan. Go ask any Japanese company employees what is "SABISU ZANGYO", which literally means "Free/unpaid OT". Yeh, we praise them for their work ethic.

WOW!!!! So many people above totally miss the point of his story!!!

Violations of Apple Supplier Code of Conduct Found in Pegatron Factory in Shanghai, China

Dejian (Ken) Zeng

Shanghai, China

Today (March 24, 2017), the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus (PRODUCT)RED Special Edition are available to order worldwide online and in stores, in recognition of more than 10 years of partnership between Apple and (RED) to fight AIDS. As Apple continues to enhance its corporate social responsibility, it is important to pay attention to the fundamental human rights of the workers who have produced these special iPhones that contribute to the advancement of people’s right to health.

Last summer, I conducted an undercover investigation in an iPhone factory in China and documented violations of human rights there. I sent the letter below to the Apple Suppliers Responsibility team and received no response.

Dear Apple Suppliers Responsibility Team,

I am writing to report the violations of Apple Supplier Code of Conduct found in one of the Pegatron factories in Shanghai called Changshuo. And I am looking for a respond of these violations that I am reporting.

I am a current New York University student, pursing Master of Public Administration in Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service. This summer I conducted an undercover investigation in Changshuo. From June 20 to Aug 5, 2016, I worked and lived there as an ordinary workers. Here is what I found:

Involuntary Overtime

According to the Code of Conduct, “all overtime must be voluntary.” However, during my time in Changshuo, I could never get a permission of not overtime.

July 6, I talked with my supervisor for the first time about stop working overtime. I said I got a part-time position in the city which is better paid and I could not work during the overtime hours. I didn’t get an answer until 4 days later. And within these 4 days, there were back and forth arguments, interrogation, and criticisms from the managers. I was even taken to the manger that was four level higher than me. And the final answer I got was a “no.” Managers had very bad attitude and criticized me as “a selfish person.”

They reasoned that there was no one to take my station if I didn’t work overtime. If that was the case and the factory really does not have any mechanisms to handle the situation, how can it keeps its promise about voluntary overtime?

I even went to the Employee Services Center to complain later. The staff there said workers were all just cooperating with the production in the factory and they invalidated my claim that me being “forced” to do overtime. My complaint was never entered into the system in the end.

A more detailed story is available here (https://wp.nyu.edu/gallatin_human_rights_fellows/category/2016/deijan-zeng/). I urge Apple and its suppliers to take actions, build up relevant mechanisms to deal with this situation and fulfill its promise of “voluntary overtime.”

Discrimination on Employment

According to the Code of Conduct, “Supplier shall not require pregnancy or medical tests, except where required by applicable laws or regulations or prudent for workplace safety, and shall not improperly discriminate based on test results.”

In Changshuo, physical examination is required before workers get employed. Women who are pregnant and people with tattoo longer than 10 centimeters will not be able to get the employment. The doctor told us this clearly before we paid for and conducted the test.

Protections on Stations with Laser and Noise

According to the Could of Conduct, “Supplier shall provide workers with job-related, appropriately maintained personal protective equipment and instruction on its proper use.” However, in Changshuo, this is unfulfilled. In stations that with the noise warning sign, workers are not provided earplugs, such as the stations using the airbrush to clean the housing. In stations that with the laser warning sign, workers are not provided eye protection equipments. I worried these situations might damage workers’ health in a long term.

In the end, I wish Apple and its suppliers can keep their promises according to the Apple Suppliers Code of Conduct and ensure the appropriate rights of workers are protected.

Additionally, I require Apple to respond to my comments giving further explanation and proper course of action to the situations that occurred during my time at Changshuo.

Sincerely,

Dejian (Ken) Zeng

There is lot of similarities with our production facility and I will post those similarities in evening after leaving from office. It can be used for improvement.

. .
Its a low level job paying, 400 USD per month goes a long way in China, especially when housing is provided free.

People earning minimum wage in the U.S might make more dollar wise but will barely make rent and have to live off instant noodles and hot dog grade foods.

Then again, a lot of people in the U.S.A (and here in Australia) would rather not work at all and collect welfare payments. Food stamps. Section 8 housing.

If this job was available to our Indian OP and pay a quarter as much, he would be dancing in the streets in joy.

So we should damn apple absorb most profits, leaving poor little to its partners.

.
The working conditions seem to be quite good for an unskilled worker.
I used to think it was like a dungeon. The media blows things out of proportion. China knows how to treat its citizens well.

You didn't know sometime they are some hanjian receiving money from some outside source and twist the fact. So what he is Chinese? Are you telling me there is no American betraying USA?

.
this is apples issue/fault nothing to do with China. they are a hard working country that provide for the rest of the world.

apple can afford to pay employee a fair wage or bring the production to USA.

Oh LOL!! Let me guess this is another "poor farm boy from Ohio somehow ending up in China" story...who ends up actually being Eastern European or something.

Edit: Yep, that's exactly what it is.

https://www.chinasmack.com/young-american-working-in-china-earns-only-1500-rmb-a-month
"t was subsequently reported (and now re-reported) that the man featured in the photos was actually a model hired to do advertising for the company, had entered the workshop to experience what it was like, and the photos were taken by an employee of the company assigned to accompany him during his visit. This employee decided to post the photos and fabricate a story relating to the then topical world financial crisis, which came to light when investigating Chinese reporters went to the factory, found that no such employee exists, and company management explained what had happened."

You should listen to the laughable video on this page of this "American" (with a horrible eastern European accent..maybe the same guy) who is supposedly from some poor Ohio farm town. http://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/4gT20dLcBVvz6bSmiuXNcw

As I know, no one could force anyone to work overtime.
If a worker finds the job is not suitable for him, it is not difficult to find a job with an income more than $450 .

After I read this article, the first thing i find is the hypocrisy of westerners .
On one hand, they took advantage of their leading technology and made the unfair rules so that westerners could exploit the workforce of developing nations .
On the other hand, they stand up and criticize the vile working place and low income of worker of those nations who would not submit to be exploited for ever and will sacrifice a lot for the development of nations .

Everybody want to live better.
If the westerners want to do something good for the workers in Apple product assemble line, they should change the rule of international trade and be more generous to share their tech .

A lot of westerners accuse China of copying their tech and disrepecting IP, which I could understand, cause these rules of IP are made by these industrialized nations early and used to lock the undeveloped country as a chain for making them be the economic slaves.

German copied Britain in the second half of the nineteenth century and Japan copied Westerns in the late 19th century and the first half of 20th. Now they changed their place and became judges.
Hypocritical, but understandable, cause it is for their benefits .

The most ridiculous thing i have heard is someone from poor nations joining to westerners in laughing at China.
I just ask a question how many people in your nation could afford modern technical product, if not for China.

I'm pretty sure the only entity being criticized in this article is Apple. Yes, westerners are judges...judges of our own companies who knowingly exploit poor people in developing countries. That's what the entire article is about. That's the Chinese student's point.
