What is the U.S. strategy in the South China Sea?

.
To promote an environment of intransigence and belligerence in the region so the local participants don't seek to resolve their differences diplomatically.

The resulting state of perpetual semi-warlike posture will make sure the locals remain preoccupied in the neighborhood instead of working together for mutual benefit and to challenge the established hegemony.

P.S. Keep them divided and at each others' throat -- oldest play in the game book.

What do you think are the options of Philippians, Vietnamese when China wants to eat all their territory? Did you ever looked at the territory China is claiming ? It's reaching shores of most of Asean countries.. Is that not ridiculous? and on top of it, is China really ready for any diplomatic solutions. The only solution for them is to take all what it claims as its own.. Now tell me who wants everyone to get involved.. Small ASEAN nations are 100% right in seeking help from other powers when China is trying to show it's muscles to occupy other's territory..

But while ASEAN leaders wanted to promote diplomatic solutions, the Chinese leaders has sought to bribe Cambodian, who currently holds chair ASEAN in 2012, with the desire to inhibit the process diplomacy of ASEAN in resolving disputes "too fast "....

Sorry, your viet are much more greedy than us, I think you will not forget your ambition that the third strongest power in the world! Yes, we are immature, We just learn how to be superpower, whether give some lession to some countries that are greedy and are food encough to reject the face. of course, the ungrateful country is included in the list, Chinese remembe that who betray us, who help us!! you viet is much smarter than Phillippine, But can't compare with china!

that s right vietnam is greedy and immature couldnt agreed more

vietnam is too greedy and they are equal to ingratitude

I don't think someone could be more greedy than the chinese. Easily to see if we look the map China's claims "nine-dotted line" in SCS.

You want us to be "grateful" to China, the country was suddenly attacked innocent Vietnamese civilians while they had no defense because they think that the chinese are "brothers", the country attacked transport ships and Vietnamese construction-soldiers, the country has invaded our islands, the country is threatening and robbing Vietnamese fishermen in Vietnam's EEZs, the country regularly harass our sovereignty in the Vietnam's EEZs ?

I don't think I've called anyone I dislike "big" and "fat" since I was in elementary school. Do monkeys have a slower maturation rate or something?

Greedy are mostly referred Big n Fat.

And not monkey, but Panda have slow maturation rate.

not "bullied" by Pinoys or vietcongs but "harrassed" just like indian cheerleaders. Those are growing pain in the @ss!

Again your response resembles your mental health same as your avatar.

People all over the world now know that China is the bad guy and the Philippines is just a small country being bullied by a
bigger country(big fat China) but standing its ground because Philippines is in the right.

The US should maintain a strong presense in the SCS to remind the 600lbs gorilla(China) that there's a 1500lbs gorilla(US) that's
ready to kick China's @ss if she keeps on bullying and terrorizing her smaller and weaker neighbors.

China's basis for claiming the SCS is because it's called south CHINA sea...which is absurd. China has yet to produce her
historical evidence...no 1200's map to show.

The Philippines has an indisputable ownership and sovereignty over Scarborough Shoal. China's just a landgrabber.
So you can represent for the people of the whole world? You call us landgrabber, What about you!
So anyone who doesn't yield to Chinese hegemony is branded as Indian,

I as an Indian take that as the Sweetest compliment coming from Chinese jingoist.
If someone who step on your land, and annihilate your army easily is the jinoist, I am also think chinese jingoist is a compliment from indian.

They are seeking help from other country, include you india, Of course, they can do it, But not mean that small is right, we don't want to brag about our power, but if they want to trouble us, we will not compromise!
But while ASEAN leaders wanted to promote diplomatic solutions, the Chinese leaders has sought to bribe Cambodian, who currently holds chair ASEAN in 2012, with the desire to inhibit the process diplomacy of ASEAN in resolving disputes "too fast "....
The country side with us is bribed by us, as you logic, Do you bribe India and USA? In ASEAN, Only you and Philippine bark loud, Even you are the rotating chairman, so do you think they will side with you??

Post lacking logic even doesn't even seem remotely related to my reply.

quote my posts when you have something intelligible

. .
you really think that USA is goin to do that without having benefits coming to it self?

There is a difference between benefits of two...........

One is behaving like Mafia, grabbing land and property.

Other is a businessman, ready to do business and safeguard its interest.

Definitely there is a chance of survival and even Prosperity, in the case of 2nd option.

Big fat China is a landgrabber. It is a fact that China has yet to produce her historical evidence that will support her 1947
9-dash claim. China's historical evidence is NOWHERE TO BE FOUND. And everything is just based on what their government
claiming. No pictures available on the net or newspapers. The Chinese government is just fabricating LIES about their history.

Why won't any Chinese post a link of their historical evidence???

In the 1700's philippine map(Carta Hydrographical y Chorographical De Las Yslas Filipinas by Fr. Pedro Murilo Velarde, S.J. and
published in 1734)clearly state that scarborough shoal was already part of zambales province, under effective control of the
spanish in the Philippines back then.

The Philippines is the true OWNER of Scarborough Shoal...and that the irrefutable TRUTH.

Wikileaks report:

MANILA, Philippines - Chinese authorities have failed to identify specific historical evidence backing Beijing's claims that it owns
disputed islands in the West Philippine Sea, a confidential US embassy cable published by anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks said.

Cable 08BEIJING3499, sent to Washington by the US embassy in Beijing in September 9, 2008, said a Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) official and a local scholar could not identify specific historical records to justify China's "Nine Dashes" claim that covers the whole Spratlys and areas within other countries' exclusive economic zones (EEZs).

MFA Department of Treaty and Law Oceans and Law of the Sea Division Deputy Director Yin Wenqiang told a US embassy
political officer on August 30, 2008 that "China has indisputable sovereignty over the islands in the South China Sea and the
adjacent waters."

However, the US official said "Yin admitted he is not aware of the historical basis for the 'Nine Dashes'" and only mentioned
unspecified "Chinese historical documents" that indicate the basis for China's claims on territory west of the Philippines, according to the cable.

The US official also talked to Beijing University Asia scholar Yang Baoyun about China's claims.

Yang said China's claims "date back to ancient times, prior to the development of the modern nation-state."

"Neither MFA's Yin nor Beijing University's Yang could specify a historical document that indicated the basis for the demarcation
of the 'Nine Dashes'," the cable added.

Yang referred to a 2000 MFA "white paper" on the Spratlys. "However, the white paper devotes little attention to the history of
the "Nine Dashes," providing, for example, only vague references to areas frequented by Chinese fisherman from Hainan," the
memo said.

What is the U.S. strategy in the South China Sea?
May. 17, 2012

So what is the U.S. strategy in the South China Sea?

The U.S. strategy can be summarized in one sentence: to hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

As Simon Tisdall, of the Guardian, puts it, "China syndrome dictates Washington's Asia-Pacific strategy. Barack Obama has no wish to conjure the specter of a new cold war but is determined to beat back any Chinese bid for hegemony in Asia-Pacific."

To do so, the first step in the U.S. South China Sea strategy is to build up the defense capabilities of the Philippines and other members of ASEAN so to improve their ability to protect their own shores.

As George Amurao, of Mahidol University in Bangkok, said, "Washington's openness towards Manila's military wish list suggests a belief that well-armed smaller claimants can keep China at bay. In an official statement released by the Philippines on May 3, the U.S. government has agreed to triple the Foreign Military Financing it will award to the Philippines in 2012."

As part of Washington's high-profile foreign policy shift toward the Asia-Pacific, the U.S. also is going beyond ASEAN to enhance and enlarge its alliance system with other key states in the Asia-Pacific region, including Australia, Japan, South Korea and India. To counterbalance China's growing power, the Obama administration announced the establishment of a permanent military base in Darwin, Australia. Amid the global troop cuts, U.S. ballistic missile defense cooperation with Japan is well advanced, and the U.S. military presence in South Korea will be reinforced. And Washington's desire to contain China's ambitions is a driving force behind the recent rapprochement with New Delhi.

Finally, to safeguard one of the busiest sea lanes in the world, the U.S. evolving Asia-Pacific strategy includes a stronger presence in the South China Sea. "This area is growing in importance to the future of the U.S. economy and our national security," announced Panetta, "this means improving capabilities that maintain our military's technological edge and freedom of action."

While an all out U.S.-China shooting war in South China Sea is not an inevitability, the U.S.' new South China Sea strategy represents a delicate tightrope act, one that aims to contain China's growing territorial ambitions in the South China Sea but avoid to oblige the U.S. to an open confrontation with China.

US should looked at the latest treaty in regard to Spratly island .

Following the defeat of Japan at the end of World War II, China (Republic of China) re-claimed the entirety of the Spratly Islands (including Taiping Island), accepting the Japanese surrender on the islands based on the Cairo and Potsdam Declarations.

If Cairo and Potsdam Declaration is worth the paper that its writing on, than all the clauses on the declaration must be observed. All the claims base on maps, continental shelf, geographical location are pointless as the latest international agreement refers to Republic of China(Taiwan) as the owner of the entire Spratly Island. Taiwan should go to international court using Potsdam Declaration as the evidence of ownership of the island. All other nations occupying any of the islands or shores are invaders and must be expelled.

The Potsdam declaration is the Republic of China (Taiwan's) claim to the island of South China Sea. In 1947, Republic of China, which is the Taiwan government now, place the lines on the map to show its claims base on Potsdam declaration. Its there any more recent international agreements on these islands. If not, than Taiwan is the rightful owner of these islands.

if you claim the Potsdam declaration, then china itself is giving up any claim to the ryoku islands etc that japan has sovreignty over and yet china claim as it's own?? since china signed the declaration too?? lol

but the fact remains, your "map outlining chinese territory" is NOT a part of the Potsdam declaration, no country signed any document saying everything inside your imaginary line belongs to china!! stop making things up!

also since you want to get on subject of treaties and declarations

Article 23 of the San Francisco Peace Treaty designated the US as "the principal occupying power" with respect to the territories covered by the geographical scope of the treaty, including "Formosa and the Pescadores." So reality is... the usa has sovreignty over taiwan :D

so cop that china ;)
