* Conference to formulate proposals to resolve energy crisis
* PM says govt working seriously to overcome energy crisis
* Circular debt main reason behind load shedding

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani on Friday called a two-day conference on energy from Monday to discuss all aspects of the power shortage in the country and formulate concrete proposals to resolve the issue as soon as possible.

Gilani asked all chief ministers and ministers concerned along with their teams of experts to attend the conference to sort out all impediments.

The agenda given for the ‘Energy and Power Conference’ was identified as utilisation of the existing capacity of power projects, diversification of gas to the power sector, resolution of issues of payments to PEPCO, resolution of circular debts, enable fuel base IPPs to increase production, better management to improve efficiency of power plants as well as transmission losses, focus on medium-term projects for expanding capacity through construction of hydel, coal and other sources of energy, better load management and efforts for energy or electricity conservation.

The prime minister said public protests in various cities against load shedding were becoming a daily routine and a source of serious concern for the government.

Overcoming crisis: He appealed to the nation to show patience, as the government was seriously working to overcome energy shortage in minimum possible time. He said the new projects had been commissioned, while more would be commissioned in the months to come. He expressed confidence that the country would soon start benefiting from the fruits of the policy measures taken by the government.

Circular debt: Highlighting the causes of the energy shortage, the prime minister said one of the major reasons behind the current energy situation was the issue of circular debt.

He said this had hampered the government’s persistent endeavours to eliminate load shedding.

Gilani expressed hope that the federal and provincial governments would sit together and resolve the issue once and for all.

Prime Minister Gilani asked the agencies concerned to take immediate measures to ensure fuel supplies to fully utilise the power generation capacities presently lying idle.

He also asked for making conservation measures more consistent to have visible impact in the situation on ground.

LAHORE, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Chief Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif on Saturday said that load shedding has become the biggest problem of Pakistan and the government failed to do anything significant in this regard.

Talking to media here, Nawaz appreciated the tolerance of the people suffering from load shedding. He said that there was no cut in the electricity bills amid long unscheduled power outages.

Import electricity.

Thenstart building dams and start utilising gas fields for the purpose.

Coal is not high quality and will require huge investment for removing moisture. Also World bank doesn't provide loan for coal plants.

Dams are good option for near term and coal in mid term.

But BUY now.

Focus on renewable energy like solar and wind. Be as self-reliant as possible.

Senior Minister, Raja Riaz Ahmad has said that the importance of solar energy as an inexhaustible, pollution-free and cheap source of energy, particularly for a developing economy like Pakistan, could hardly be emphasized. The government is giving special attention to maximum investment in energy sector and the investors should launch new power projects to overcome the
energy needs.

He was talking with a group of investors which called on him at his office here Tuesday. "Pakistan comes in the solar belt and the solar energy intensity in the Sun Belt is approximately 1800-2200 KWh per square meter."

"The solar energy resources for our country are about 100,000 megawatts as Pakistan is the 6th luckiest country in the world where sun-availability is up to 16 hours on average," he told.

And according to international estimates, Punjab is the most suitable place for setting up solar energy projects, he added.

Raja maintained that energy self-sufficiency is a must for the industrial development of any nation today. The importance of developing solar energy as an alternative energy source for sun-friendly country like Pakistan where sun shines for over 300 days a year could meet the energy needs of the whole country.

Pakistan has an ideal climate to generate solar and wind energy, he said. Besides abundance of sunny days, the intensity of solar radiation is also very high, roughly 500 watts per square meter at ground level. This huge solar energy potential is waiting to be exploited through proper R&D, he observed.

Tapping solar energy may be the cost-effective, environment-friendly and pollution free choice as the only alternative energy source for Pakistan which enjoys both good quantity and quality of sunshine, he concluded.

Import power or add extra Units.
Also,
Privatize the distribution and check power theft
Promote use of low power consuming options.

umm....that is very common in pak!
almost 3 in every 5 households steal electricity!!!(btw thats my estimate =D)

solar in pumjab and wind mills in balochistan area..
the wind is very strong there

hi,
can someone answer?
cant they allow people to privately produce and sell electricity?
cant govt buy solar panels and windmills and bear some loss and sell it to people at some affordable rate?
or use all labor power and resources of country and make a dam in a year?
is that immpossible?
neuclear energy can be used make atom bomb(distructive purpose), cant it be used to make power(a usefull constuctive purpose)

1.Solar Energy (v. expensive)
2.Utilize Coal Reserves (time consuming however POSSIBLE within short time period)
3.Build more Dams (again time consuming however POSSIBLE within short time period)
4.Import Electricity from neighbouring countries like Iran (10% will make more money and it will be expensive per unit also need some time)
5.Dig up Balochistan Province in search for Oil & Gas (a longterm strategy however i bet balochistan is so rich in mineral resources)

Dams need water , India taking it away.

Why bring India into all the thread.

Water is no issue, the wastage is. pakistan waste its 34 liter of water unutilized in its total 100 liter of water.

Dam should be build in Sindh etc. to stop the unused water flowing into the sea.

Dam is outdated concepts. Also as there is lack of water all over the world they are not sustainable. Pakistan has wasted golden years now its too late to build dam for electricity.

Nuclear energy + Gas from Coal + Solar energy + Wind energy + Bio Energy is the need of the hour.
