Kaabil just released in Karachi tonight. India gave it so much love. Hope it gets the same love from Pakistan as well,” tweeted Hrithik Roshan on wednesday. It’s an innocent tweet celebrating the success of his latest movie in a foreign country. It’s a great thing actually. Two countries enjoying and cherishing each other’s culture and art (not that Kaabil can in any way be called art), is something that should be encouraged.

Of course, one has to go to some lengths to explain that to the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), but that attempt would be a quixotic one. The MNS who made life hell for Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, because of the presence of a Pakistani actor in the movie, should naturally be angry at an Indian movie trying to earn money from the “terrorist” neighbour of ours. But really, no one seems to be concerned. Which seems odd.

In fact, just a few days ago, Kailash Vijayvargiya, the national general secretary of BJP, tweeted on January 21: “Jo Raees desh ka nahi, wo kisi kaam ka nahi. Aur ekj Kaabil deshbhakt ka saath, toh hum sabhi ko dena hi chahiye (The rich who don’t belong to the country are of no use. The able patriot is the one we should all support)”.

The Islamophobic BJP leader’s comment, praising a Hindu actor and berating a Muslim one, also begs the question, if Hrithik Roshan is “deshbhakt” by your standards (basically by the virtue of being Hindu), does his promotion of his film in Pakistan not make him anti-national? After all, anyone who says anything nice about our neighbours is deemed anti-national and seditious by our own political leaders.

Imagine a scenario if Shah Rukh Khan or Aamir Khan went all out in promoting a movie in Pakistan wouldn’t the nationalists like Kailash Vijayvargia and Ashoke Pandit happily tweet an inappropriate comment about the actor being from Pakistan or belong there? But I guess double standards don’t matter as much as one’s religion.

Hrithik Roshan’s Kaabil and SRK’s Raees should and most likely will be huge success in Pakistan; as they should be. It is after all, one of the few ways in which the people of these two nations still connect with each other. And the lack of a political mudsling on Hrithik Roshan is heartening. But perhaps what the best thing would be is that our politicians stay out of the lives of entertainers.

From attacking directors for hiring Pakistani artists, to assaulting directors for allegedly tampering historical fiction, politicians have no business being moral guardians for a country where everyone can make up their own mind.

A lot of hindus in India think muslims of India are pro pakistani... so if anybody says anything positive, it just proves their bias. If Hritik was muslim, he would have got same flak.
btw MNS is an extreme version of that idea, most hindus dont think about these sort of things too much, otherwise SRK wont be No. 1 start in bollywood.

I have just the right article to explain how perceptions are made,

The Opposition Congress aided and abetted by certain media houses in Kerala tried in vain to sabotage the union budget presentation by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Wednesday. The death of E Ahamed, member of the Lok Sabha representing the communal Muslim League had died in the early hours of Wednesday at the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in the capital following a massive heart attack. Ahamed, who collapsed in the House on Tuesday minutes before the President was to address the joint session of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha had been rushed to the RML Hospital, was admitted to the ICU and put on life support system. His close relations who reached the Hospital late night created a commotion outside for the decision of the hospital authorities to put the 80 year old MP on life support system.
The House observed silence for a minute as a mark of respect for the departed soul.

Smelling blood, the mother-son duo of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi rushed to the hospital and shouted at the doctors for putting Ahamed in life support system without the consent of the relatives. Malayala Manorama newspaper and its TV channel Manorama Vision put on the news that Signora Sonia rebuked the doctors for putting the Lok Sabha member on ventilator without the permission or knowledge of Ahamed’s relations who were at his side when he fell ill.

When the House met on Wednesday morning, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan informed the members about the passing away of Ahamed and moved a resolution expressing the condolences of the House on the bereavement. The House observed silence for a minute as a mark of respect for the departed soul. The Speaker said in normal circumstances the House would have adjourned for the Day without conducting the proceedings. “But today happens to be a day chosen and decided by the President of India himself for the presentation of the 2017-18 budget. It is a Constitutional obligation on our part and the Finance Minister will present the budget. The House will observe a day of condolence on Thursday where we will have references,” the Speaker told the House.

But the Leader of the Opposition, Mallikarjun Kharge, stood up and with the tacit support offered by the members belonging to the Congress, started shouting and ridiculing the Speaker as well as the treasury benches. The will of the people succeeded as Finance Minister Jaitley got up and greeted the country on the occasion of Vasant Panchami, a festival of spring, hope and happiness… Maybe it is that the God Almighty whom the Muslims address as Allah chose this day itself to welcome the Muslim League member to His abode to bestow the former minister with whatever is promised in the Holy Book…
Kutty was executed by the Taliban terrorists and the dead body was sent to India.

Ahamed was a long time serving member of Kerala Legislative Assembly and Lok Sabha and had represented Malappuram constituency. Malappuram is described as Kerala’s Pakistan as no one other than Muslims could get elected from the constituency because 95 per cent of the population are Muslims.

The first things that come to mind about Ahamed’s adventures as minister both in Kerala as well as in New Delhi are the 1983 elevation of Justice V Khalid as the chief justice of Jammu and Kashmir from Kerala High Court and the kidnapping and murder of Raman Kutty, a Border Roads Organisation soldier who was on deputation to Afghanistan in November 2005.

While the family members of Raman Kutty, who hailed from Harippadu in Kerala, tried frantically to reach E Ahamed, the then Union Minister of State for External Affairs, he switched off his mobile to avoid the calls. Kutty was executed by the Taliban terrorists and the dead body was sent to India. Ahamed was on all TV channels “to express his condolences”!

It is this same Ahamed Saheb, who is described as the embodiment of all that is good, who played a major role in saving the butchers of Maradu in Kerala. In 2005 when eight Hindu fishermen were butchered by Muslim extremists at Maradu in Kozhikode, it was Ahamed who played a significant role in preventing policemen from searching the Maradu mosque where the arms used for the massacre had been stored.

V Khalid, a serving judge of the Kerala High Court was elevated as the Chief Justice of J&K High Court in 1983. But the official order promoting him and the warrant of procedure, his travel documents etc. did not reach Khalid as the same were despatched through Ahamed, then a minister in the Karunakaran led Kerala ministry.

Ahamed, who was in New Delhi for official work was handed over the documents by the office of the Supreme Court Chief Justice with the directions to hand deliver the same to Khalid who was in Kochi at the time. Ahamed, who had “many private businesses” and “private engagements” (which are not advisable to write about in these columns) took a detour in Bombay and spent days with his hosts…
This news would have been a major controversy had someone from a non-Muslim community been the minister in place of Ahamed.

What happened is that he misplaced the cover to be handed over to Khalid. Had he mentioned the name of the place where he lost the cover, it definitely would have cost him his position as a minister in the Kerala Government. To make matters short, Khalid was given telephonic instructions to start from Kochi by air and collect the duplicate copies of the order appointing him as J&K chief justice from Kerala House in New Delhi.

M A Nizar, a former district judge of Kerala recounted the incident in a humorous style during a private get together. This news would have been a major controversy had someone from a non-Muslim community been the minister in place of Ahamed.

And also please remember, Ahamed was the Kerala Minister during 1982-1987 when a group of Kuwaiti citizens who were declared as persona non grata in India were taken around the State as official guests… Any doubt? Ask C P Nair, the then Home Secretary of Kerala who now leads a retired life at Thiruvananthapuram.

May Ahamed’s soul rest in peace…
