What if Jammu & Kashmir did a Tamil Nadu on Afzal Guru? Says Kashmir CM

A tweet from Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday stirred a controversy, with the BJP accusing him of playing vote-bank politics.

A day after the Tamil Nadu assembly adopted a resolution urging President Pratibha Patil to reconsider clemency for the three killers of former PM Rajiv Gandhi, Abdullah wondered what reactions a similar act by the J&K House would evoke.

"If the J&K assembly passed a resolution similar to the Tamil Nadu one for Afzal Guru, would the reaction have been as muted? I think not," he tweeted.

Guru, who hails from Kashmir, was sentenced to death for plotting the attack on Parliament on December 13, 2001.

Five terrorists had stormed the Parliament complex and killed sevensecuritymen before being shot dead.

The union home ministry has recommended to the President that the mercy petition filed on Guru’s behalf be rejected.

The death sentence for Guru is a sensitive issue in the Kashmir Valley and Abdullah had tweeted on the subject earlier.

His tweet on Wednesday drew sharp reactions from the BJP, which called the remarks "unfortunate" and chided him for playing vote-bank politics.

"Had the Hurriyat leaders made such a comment, it would have been understandable," BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said in Delhi.

"Omar wants to address his constituency. They should not indulge in vote-bank politics on every matter," he added.

The Congress chose to distance itself from the issue. "What the CM comments on Twitter is his business," said party spokesperson Renuka Chowdhary. "In a democracy, it's perfectly okay for people to voice their opinions collectively or individually."

I believe..they have every right do it and in case Gov Pardons Rajiv's killer then Afzal Guru has right to get the mercy too.....Every one should be treated in equal...Of course public(Including me..too) can make a noise than Rajiv killer is not against the indian nationhood rather Afzal Guru is against the nation...But still then i beleive from a very brod perspective rule is applicable to all..irrepsective who he is...

@Lankan Ranger, you read a lot of Indian news. :)

Interesting piece indeed. Thanks for sharing!

some of you probably won't like me for saying this but the 3 killers of Rajiv Gandhi should not be hanged but praised and given a estate in Ladakh i hate Rajiv Gandhi and his mother i like the fact they are both dead

. .
indian politics makes a mockery out of its judicial system,i would rather like if most of the scums in parliaments are dead

.
@Omar Abdullah : Yes ofc. U are constitutionally right in claiming so... plz do so if u think he is truly innocent or has an iota of reconciliation.

.
I am not getting... i mean who cares what state assemblies or CMs says. The court decision is final, especially Supreme Court.

He has reason to say so... after all we are still democratic?????

.
In Tamilnadu people play politics in everything...... In 2000 the then CM passed resolution saying they should be hanged now he is
saying they should be pardoned? Now why is the J&K CM is so worried about them(Afzal or those 3). These people prove that when it comes to politics "we are same..... National Integration it seems".

true . i conceded your point . but there is a difference , he disagreed with them so wanted them dead . i can disagree with a lot of your views but wanting you dead because of them would be wrong .
