They’re not buying anything American now, they have tariffs on their goods, which have been exempted since the 70’s.

Pakistan can invest into making the JF-17 as good a possible; and go beyond the current design by adopting a semi-stealth design (by Shaping, Radar absorbing materials, and low/medium/high band apertures to detect and counter jam enemy radars similar to the Rafale's Spectra system)

We also need to adopt the best BVR and WVR missiles.

We need to keep up the training hours so our pilots keep their edge.

Finally we should look into investing into the J-31V2 design, and start to field it so we can begin to make it better and better. By training against our own top fighters (JF-17 Block III and F-16 Block 52) and allies like Saudi Eurofighters (similar technologically to the F-21/ F-16 Block 70), Qatari Rafales, and even Chinese J-20s and J-31s, we can be prepared to deal with current 4+ Gen and future Indian 5th Gen planes. If India acquires the F-35 or Su-57 or even manages to operationalizes a Medium stealth aircraft, the PAF will be ready.

A half Squadron of J-31V2 (8 Planes) with a half Squadron of JF-17 Block III/IV (8 Planes) would be enough to start testing and training against the above mentioned aircraft.

We start this now, by the time the enemy has gotten around to inducting and training its pilots, we will have already learned more than they even know about the aircraft they operate, while will be operating planes and using missiles they have no idea about.

This is insane ... Only Mig 21 are for immediate retirement rest will stay atleast for a decade (as jaguar are being upgraded)

Su-30 is a very capable jet when it's in the air. On the ground story changes. It's a maintenance and a logistical nightmare. The programme began when the Soviet Union was at the end of its life and the R&D establishments didn't have many funds to go around. In the mid-1990s the aircraft still had many fill-in-the-blank issues. But the Indian government went on to purchase it primarily not to enhance IAF's strike capability but portray India as a global power able to taken on the likes of US. The effectiveness of the F-15s against Soviet-built jets, including MiG-29, during the first Gulf War, convinced the Indian leadership to seek something along the lines of F-15 to achieve that objective.

Note: India has in the past justified American military actions in a third country as a rationale for its own military modernization. Recently declassified documents suggest that US ambassador in India during the 1970s had written a letter to the US Government that American intervention in Chile against president Allende would force Indra Gandhi to test nuclear devices, which she did in the end.

The Indian government, HAL, and to some extent IAF as well believed they could fill the blanks by buying avionics and radar from Europe & later Israel. Blanks were definitely filled but the operational cost and operability of the jet became even more problematic. India was still complaining to the Russians about the lack of spare parts for Su-30MKI as of 2017, even though they had reached an agreement with them to hasten the supplies. In 2018 it was reported that only 50% of Su-30MKI fleet was available for combat missions.

India is not the only complainer. Malaysia has also been complaining that their Su-30s are virtually unusable. Chinese maintain secrecy over their aircraft but there are suggestions they too have had problems. They solved some issues by reverse engineering & introducing indigenous technologies into it, & eventually reverse engineered the whole aircraft. Later they also introduced technologies from Su-35 on their Russian built Su-30s to improve its performance and operability. Eventually, they just decided to acquired S-35 from Russia. Last but not least, Russians themselves seemed to have quickly grown tired of Su-30, capped it to ~130 jets, and jumped to Su-35 programme.

These are the reasons that forced IAF to look for more Mirage-2000s in the early 2000s, around 150 to 200 of them. Mirages were and still are the most reliable jets for IAF. But seeing the contract was for big billions others pitched in & thus began the feast of Indian government and R&D establishment. IAF's operational requirements were again thrown under the bus in favour of a politically correct jet fighter that offered big commissions. Rafale was brought in, controversially disqualified, controversially brought back into the competiton, & even more controversially got selected. HOWEVER, Rafale is a logical successor to Mirage-2000, so the IAF won't feel too burdened.

During AeroIndia show in Bengalore, Lockheed-Martin revealed on February 20, 2019, the new name of its contender competing to become the new fighter jet of the Indian Air Force: the F-21.

While the name might be reminiscent of the F-22 Raptor, also manufactured by Lockheed Martin, the F-21 is in fact an F-16V "Viper" adapted to the needs of the Indian Air Force.

To do so, the F-21 is fitted with a Ground Collision Avoidance System (GCAS), a retractable flight refueling boom, a "Sniper" targeting pod, and an Active Electronically Scanned Array AN/APG-83 radar provided by Northrop-Grumman, derived from the two radars that already equip the F-22 and the F-35.

And the American manufacturer insists heavily on the commonality between the F-21 and the two stealth fighters in its catalogue. “The F-21 has common components and learning from Lockheed Martin’s 5th Generation F-22 and F-35 and will share a common supply chain on a variety of components” says the manufacturer reported by Reuters. It goes as far as to name its candidate “India's Pathway to F-35”.

This tender favors "make in India" proposal, with technology transfers and the use of companies in the Indian aviation sector. Dassault Aviation has been allied with Reliance since the previous tender (MMRCA) which saw 36 Rafale being ordered, while Boeing relies on Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and Mahindra Defense Systems. As for Lockheed Martin, it promised that through Tata Advanced Systems, it would build F-21 assembly lines in India which would create "thousands of jobs" for Indian workers and support "hundreds of new jobs" for American engineers. Hopefully for Lockheed, this will please both the “Made in India” and the “America First” campaigns.

F-21 aka F-16E can take JF-17 Block 3 !

Jf 17 vs f-21 will be an interesting and equally matching competition.

But for indian pilots it will take 5 to 7 years in order to come on equal footing with paf jf 17 pr f-16 pilots provided israeliz or americans teach them tactics.

If they dont teach india it would be 10 to 15 years of learning curve for mastery of f-16/f-21

Lockheed should include a new feature in F21 for crash avoidance where an auto pilot takes over the operation should the plane detects shaky hands and excessive sweating.
