My overall experience with Bangladeshis has been quite positive. They are friendly, courteous and intelligent. However, the events of 1971 weigh heavily on the Bangladeshi psyche.
We may disagree on what really happened, who bears the greater responsibility, and who lost more, but it does not change the fact that for the Bangladeshi people, 1971 was the birth of their nation.
Every country needs a national historical narrative that raises the spirit, confidence and pride of its people. Like most other countries, that narrative is almost always embellished and exaggerated by its political and intellectual leaders. So it is understandable that many Bangladeshis still hold some resentment towards Pakistanis.
What is encouraging, however, is that that feeling of resentment is not as dominant as it used to be and no longer defines the relationship between a Bangladeshi and a Pakistani. My experience with my Bangladeshi friends was that either 1971 never came up, or we simply agreed to disagree and moved on with our lives.
