What's new

What are the 'Must Read' books about Pakistan?

But I kind of get the feeling that I am missing so much that I dont even know about ....
or perhaps I am just getting obsessed

The next step is to visit Pakistan & see our country & our people yourself ! :smokin: :pakistan:

You'd be very surprised to find out that the Pakistan you read in these books written by self-proclaimed experts or the way the media paints us is markedly different than who we really are !

Hello everyone!

Could you help me telling me what are the MUST READ about Pakistan?

Maybe some of you still never saw me here, but Im a mexican girl doing a thesis about Military in Pakistan and its regional and international implications... basically, it is shaped like this:

chapter 1: backgrounds
chapter 2: provinces
chapter 3: military in Pakistan
chapter 4: International Relations of Pakistan

Since there are no books here, I am soon to do my Amazon book shopping...

I already have a few:

-Nawaz, Shuja. Crossed Swords ((this one I got to know here!))
-Siddiqa, Ayesha. Military Inc.
-Jalal, Ayesha. The State of Martial Rule.
-Noor-ul-Haq. Making of Pakistan: the political and military perspective.
-Rashid, Ahmed. Descent into chaos... and Pakistan on the Brick.
-Fair, Christine. Fighting to the end.
-Lieven, Anatol. Pakistan a Hard Country.
-Farwell, James. The Pakistan Cauldron.
-Coll, Steve. Ghost Wars
-Musharraf, P. In the Line of Fire
-Tariq Ali. The Duel, Pakistan on the flight path of American power.
and even I have Malala's book :P

Which are the important ones that i am missing?? I hope you could help me!!
you are living at the other end of the world...how come you were convinced to write a thesis on the military of pakistan ? :)
i would not recommend you reading the malala book though..she doesn't even know english plus she is just a very young girl who is controlled by the western media (some propaganda you don't know)..and her book was written by a british journalist.

uhmm well... everyone here writes thesis about: Mexico - US relations.... Europe, Middle East... and Asia means Japan and China only :what:....

so I first chose Kashmir dispute... but then I wasnt able to understand much about Pakistan's actions and when I started reading about Pakistan internal politics and all... I simply fell in love haha it's hard to explain....

I bought Malala's book a year ago because it sold out in here!!! which... it's really strange since mexicans are not really interested in that part of the globe... so I bought it because I didn't want to be left out :P even though I knew it would be all propaganda but I had to have it :disagree:

Don't waste your money on her book hermosa. :nono:

I already bought it!! and yet, James Farwell was the worst !!!

you know, when I was in Middle East Studies class, my professor told me that Western authors , even if they had lived for a long period of time in Middle East, it would never be the same than a native author...

So I know it would be the same thing about Pakistan ... but somehow I found her easy to understand... of course, I know I have to complete the picture she or other westerns give about Pakistan but for now I just want to know and read as much as possible :-) later on I hope I will be able to recognize all the crappy ones

-Tariq Ali. The Duel, Pakistan on the flight path of American power.

Ayesha siddiqas book was debunked here on PDF .. It's full of inaccuracies .. Christine fair (don't know what is wrong with her lol)

Reading Christine Fair, Ahmed Rashid, Ayesha Siddiqa, James Farwell or even Shuja Nawaz on Pakistan is like reading a book on Mexican Illegal Immigration into the United States by some Redneck Texan !

Try reading Ambassador Akbar S Ahmed's 'The Thistle and the Drone: How America’s War on Terror Became a Global War on Tribal Islam' , 'Jinnah, Pakistan and Islamic Identity: The Search for Saladin', 'Resistance and Control in Pakistan' , 'Pakistan: The Social Sciences' Perspective', 'Religion and Politics in Muslim Society: Order and Conflict in Pakistan' - The Author is an anthropologist, historian, ex-civil servant (who served in the Tribal Areas during the Afghan War), a film & documentary maker and a Professor of Islamic Studies at the American University in Washington DC.

Butsy suggest me a good book..

!Never knew you read so much..
