What about Greek 214 submarines to India?

The Type 214 is a diesel-electric submarine developed by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft GmbH (HDW). It features diesel propulsion with an air-independent propulsion (AIP) system using Siemens polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) hydrogen fuel cells.

A contract to build three submarines for the Greek Navy was signed 15 February 2000 and a fourth one was ordered in June 2002. The first submarine was built at HDW in Kiel,Germany and the rest at the Hellenic Shipyards Co. in Skaramangas, Greece.

The Greek Navy named them the Papanikolis class.

Due to improvements in the pressure hull materials, the Type 214 can dive nearly 400 meters. The Type 214 can carry food, fresh water and fuel for 84 days of operation.

Currently 3 submarines are under sea trials in Skaramagas, 1 being built in Greece.

Continued budgetary pressures for Greek will probably lead to cost reduction measures. Reduction of Greek Navy size seems a high possibility; Greece will have to reduce the number of submarines in order to reduce costs.

why is Greece suddenly in the limelight today? China looking for military ties, India looking for submarines and Pakistan, F-16s! Is Cupid on the prowl? :P

Greek financial crisis.

India has a precedent of buying hardware meant for nations that were afflicted by financial crisis.

Back in '98 we obtained 10 Su-30Ks which were originally destined for Indonesia but which were diverted to India due to the financial crisis there.

But a used one ? I dont think so especially with the new found money and the need to establish a logistics line.

India can get them soon then any other. Only need to bring them to India from Greek. Remember all of them are brand new.

It is a good suggestion and a new relationship oppertunity, but mate the delays within the political class and bureaucracy causes such opportunities to let away.

So its not ideal to pin hopes on these.

Besides India has this new policy of build in India itself and blame for delays ..

We need Subs in numbers! So, Fu** the delays and just go for these and replace the U-209's!The Kilo's will/Should be replaced by our own subs.

The modalities of weapons integration and customizations will require much time.
Anyway its a brilliant suggestion but sad it wont work it out.
