Western Merine Bangladesh handed over two large merchant vessel to India

These JSW ship classes displace around 8000 DWT each which is on the high side for locally made vessels. The designs are technically rather modern/sophisticated and the slated uses are coastal multi-modal traffic (containers or otherwise bulk) around ports in India. Out of the (I'm guessing ten as I recall?) four have been made and handed over to JSW in the last four years after being fitted out.

Good development. Bangladesh itself is not a maritime country like Indonesia so it is quite surprise to see thriving shipbuilding industries there.

Western Marine is private owned or state owned ?

Western Marine is a private company that has gone into IPO.

Bangladesh is a maritime nation from time immemorial. Wooden Ships built here probably carried Buddhist travelers to kingdoms in Indochina and Sri Lanka back in the day, maybe even to Bali and Sumatra. The design was similar to the Phinisi ships still built in Indonesia.

Locally-built ships fought in the Battle of Trafalgar. That shipbuilding was discontinued in the last two centuries as the British colonizers had a practice of destroying local industry in India to promote the sale of British-made products here. But now - Steel shipbuilding for local usage (2000 to 8000 DWT MPC's, Tankers and sea-going coasters etc.) is very much a thriving industry. Bangladesh has 350+ rivers and all vessels (small and large, passenger and cargo) are made locally (hundreds of smaller bulker vessels for cargo like cement, clinker, oil are built every year.

Here is some history,

Bangladesh is an ancient maritime country with a very very long history of shipbuilding. After the British conquest it was stopped. New shipbuilding activities took off in the 90's onwards but it has always been present.
