yup war itself is a shitty business and cribbing about ppl are supposed to be killed looks ridiculous.

It doesn't matter, since wars are won by destroying more of the enemy than they destroy of you. That is just the way it goes. Each side has a duty to fight as best as it can, using all the resources it has available, without a need for proportionality. War is all-out.
