US Ambassador to India Timothy J Roemer on Tuesday said President Barack Obama had reportedly told his Pakistani counterpart, Asif Ali Zardari, about America not wanting to be part of any military build-up against India.
His statements were in reply to queries on Indias concerns over Pakistan using US-supplied weapons against it.
Taking into account the consistent concerns India expressed over American military aid to Pakistan being used against it, Roemer said the US has put in place measures to ensure that the arms supplied to Pakistan are used specifically for fighting terrorism.
Vigilant
Briefing reporters here, he said: Our Congress is very vigilant, very determined and very tenacious, that for what purpose the weapons are used for and I would like to assure you that the arms supplied are to fight against terrorism. The Indian government has conveyed its displeasure over the issue to the US government on various occasions during the bilateral meetings.
Roemer added that the Oversight Committees in US Congress were extremely aggressive and vigorous about arms sales to countries.
Reiterating that the US is very particular that arms (supplied to Pakistan) be used in a particular way, he said: Our legislative and the executive have put measures in place to see that these arms are used for what they are meant.
