Watch: Beijing Replaces 1,300-Ton Bridge in Less Than 48 Hours
Nov 19, 2015
Need to replace a 1,300-ton concrete and steel bridge in a single weekend?
China’s got you covered.
At around 11 p.m. on Friday night, workers in Beijing began replacing the Sanyuanqiao Bridge, a major overpass along the city’s busy Third Ring Road. With more than 200,000 vehicles traversing it daily, the bridge is a major transit point in the Chinese capital.
The overhaul had originally been projected to take 24 hours, but it wound up taking longer due to the deteriorated condition of the original central bridge beams, according to China’s official Xinhua News Agency.
By 11:30 a.m. Sunday, workers had finished putting the new structure into position, aided by the use of “global positioning systems, laser positioning and robots,” Xinhua said.
