Why do you think the Olympics would be considered a failure? Just because the US pointed out Xianjing issues doesn't mean the Olympics would be a failure.

All I remember was articles back in January saying China halted spectator ticket sales. Maybe it was suddenly done due to Omicron concerns?

The Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 spectator policy was announced today. Given the current situation of the COVID-19 pandemic, in order to ensure the safety of all participants and spectators, it has been decided that tickets should not be sold anymore but be part of an adapted programme that will invite groups of spectators to be present on site during the Games. The organisers expect that these spectators will strictly abide by the COVID-19 countermeasures before, during and after each event so as to help create an absolutely safe environment for the athletes.

This announcement follows the release of pandemic prevention and control policy principles for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 on 29 September 2021. One of the principles was that no tickets would be sold to spectators from outside China’s mainland, and that tickets would be sold exclusively to spectators residing in China’s mainland who meet the requirements of COVID-19 countermeasures.

The Olympic Winter Games will take place between 4 and 20 February 2022, and the Paralympic Winter Games will be held from 4 until 13 March 2022.

Wait a minute....they aren't talking about the athletes being infected by the games. They are saying bringing in all these foreigners (with some potentially infected) increases the Chinese population's risk of getting Covid.

What does this have to do with the success of the Olympics? It just means China has to make sure the bubble and its 3 week quarantines are enforced to protect its citizens.

They were talking about both. There are plenty of articles on either side of the equation. If they can't contain the bubble, then there is no way to control the contagion inside the bubble.

Well I'm sure that is why they suddenly canceled selling spectator tickets to events. Trying to make the bubble more secure.

I don't see any articles saying people expect the bubble to fail. If they did they wouldn't be at the Olympics.

Tokyo had zero spectator. Beijing at least has spectators who were required to go through 14 days quarantine exiting the bubble. And of course the media were questioning China's ability in keeping the athletes safe under omicron.

Neither of these videos say anything negative about Beijing or the bubble. In fact the first video the guy says the toughest part is making sure you don't get Omicron before you get on the plane to Beijing or you are screwed. If you make it off the plane and test negative you will be all set for the length of the games.

The second one says NHL players have decided not to go not because they fear getting Covid but because so many have already tested positive and you have to go through a multi-week quarantine that it just isn't worth the hassle.


Honestly all this "media saying this and media saying that" is all in your head.

Look at the stands in the background of this video. Yes, it is not completely empty...but it is sparse.
