Migration by last residence from neighbouring countries

In 2001 Census about 5.1 million persons reported as migrant by last
residence from across the International border.

About 97% of these migrants by last residence were from the eight neighbouring countries (including Afghanistan).

Of these migrants 3.0 million were from Bangladesh, 0.9 million from
Pakistan, 0.5 million from Nepal and 0.1 million from Sri Lanka.

About 65.2% of these migrants from the neighbouring countries had
migrated to India at least 20 years back perhaps at the time of partition and later during the Bangladesh war in 1971.

In comparison to 1991, there is 31.6% decline in international migration to

India (excluding J&K) in 2001. This is due to substantial decline in the
number of recent migration and death of earlier migrants due to old age.

According to this report 3 million Bangladeshi and close to one million migrants from Pakistan but you guys never make a fuzz about Pakistani migrants. That is my one point.

Out of 3 million 65% are from pre 1971 era which leaves only 1 million of recent migrant of which must be 80% of them are Hindus and which leaves only 200,000 say muslim poor migrant.

Dont you think its very normal for people of this minor number to shift border to a neighbouring country even from a richer country to a poorer country? Dont you think more than 200,000 americans live in Mexico and a far better number in Canada even though those countries are economically weaker than America?

Even we have more than 400,000 Burmese living in Bangladesh even far more numbers of Indians. We dont think that significantly reduce the job opportunity of my country neither changed any demographic complexion of my country.

Again you are acting on the assumption Bangladesh will be able to sever northeast from India .

You do not have the military, economic or the political muscle to follow through(as India did..when it liberated Dhaka) .

These are the people who reported that their last place of residence was Bangladesh and are in India legally. This doesn't include the illegal migrants. People with no documents, no proof of their existence in India can not participate in the Census. And why would they, no one in their right mind would want take part in a National Census as an illegal migrant.

I posted the data to let both BD and Indian members to know what the actual situation is like. It's better to debate based on facts rather than emotions and cry murder at the drop of a hat.

Yes, as both you and fallstuff pointed out, the immigration seems to be decreasing as GoI has become more assertive on this. The recent census will give us clearer picture once it is out.

Both Hindus and Muslims in BD were facing persecution on ethnic line in 71, so there was a reason for people to cross over and I think most of them were given citizenship, just like Tamil immigrants or Punjabi immigrants from Sri Lanka and Pakistan respectively.

Bangladeshis don't migrate to Bihar, do they? They have become competitors of those poor people of India living in metros like Mumbai, Calcutta. Delhi etc for want of better life. As you rightly pointed out, India already have so many poor people who needs to be taken care of, we don't want any more burden.
