Union petroleum minister S. Jaipal Reddy on Monday said that a massive underground strategic oil storage facility is being built in the port city of Visakhapatnam to help India tide over international crises that may affect fuel supply to the country.

The facility will be completed in four months, Reddy said.

“Around 13 lakh tonnes of petroleum res-erves can be stored in the cavern which can support the country’s fuel needs for 90 days during any global eventuality,” he said.

The government is setting up massive oil storage facilities in underground rock caverns at Mangalore in Karnataka and at Vizag. These would be in addition to the existing stores of crude oil and petroleum products with the oil companies and will provide an emergency response in case of short-term supply disruptions during any global crises.

“I was there at the cavern yesterday and it was a spectacular sight. I was overwhelmed to see such a massive underground storage which is as tall as a 10-storey building. I wish to be in Vizag again within three to four months to commission it,” said Reddy.

The minister was in Vizag to dedicate HPCL’s Clean Fuels Project to the nation. The project, costing Rs 2,200 crores, would be useful in producing Euro IV standard fuel.

Vizag already houses an underground facility to store LPG, the first of its kind in Southeast Asia. A joint-venture of HPCL with oil major TOTAL of France, the Cavern Marine Terminal can hold 60,000 million tonnes of LPG storage. Built at the cost of Rs 333.3 crore, the LPG facility was completed in 2007.

i knew about this from earlier reports . but this being almost ready come as a welcome surprise.
the only place i know of which has underground fuel storage facility is in Bhusawal. made during WW2

Very strategic move by Indian Government . Today IAEA inspecting the Iranian facilities or it is a move just to buy time. Who knows what is running in the minds of Obama and company.

yea the project is old...but i guess its seeing its execution in a timely manner...i have always reiterated for reserves for at least 5 years. (tht means 20 such Installations)

This way all our Needs will be served and will help keep south Asian oil prices stable.
And most of all help us greatly in case of an outbreak of war.

He is basically telling our enemies where to put pins on our map.

It is difficult or not possible to hide such a huge storage facility from any body. It is military but pure civilian facility protected by military.
Again such a facility always build by keeping all threads in mind. Even some one drops bomb it may damage only part/container of it not entire storage. It is not just metal tanks but highly sophisticated structure divided into multiple air tight chambers and can withhold very high temperature.
For our enemies, fly to Vizag is very long shot .. may be they can missiles but again we have ADA.

Do you really think it is any way possible to hide such mammoth structures? But be assuered more than adequete measures will be taken to protect such strategically important locations.

Rest assured the GoI know the locations of similar projects in the neighborhood.

I think both Knowledge Reply of "Nothing"(but everything), and Logical answer of Abingdonboy are make feel relax on issue.

actully we should hav more oil reservoirs atleast for one year with following stratagy.
1. buy oil when rupee is high and store.
2. buy when oil in lowest and store.
3. use when rs loss value or oil price get high and stop import.
4. use in case of sanction or war.
5. tanks at diffrent geographical location and fix quota for defence forces.

Great move by GOI... but more facility required in Kochi,Mumbai and other cities..

I high doubt that this is the only facility of this kind, the army is bound to have its own strategic reserve of oil for war case scenario, and disclosing this news is not gonna affect much of its security concerns, since its pretty hard to hide such large construction projects, and they will most likely have high security around the area.
