Vizag tank to keep India all fuelled up

.
These things are well defended. Everybody knows where IAF/IA/IN/MEA/PMO HQ are in Delhi.

On topic, great move. We should stack up huge reserves of oil when the price is low so that we can tide over occasional price hikes (like the current Iran-west standoff)

.
One day will run out and all this will water storage tanks or historical artifacts.;)

.
yea the project is old...but i guess its seeing its execution in a timely manner...i have always reiterated for reserves for at least 5 years. (tht means 20 such Installations)

This way all our Needs will be served and will help keep south Asian oil prices stable.
And most of all help us greatly in case of an outbreak of war.

Even though its been there for some time now ., this announcement might be just to tell the world that pressure tactics wont work and we can handle the situation

.
Do you really think it is any way possible to hide such mammoth structures? But be assuered more than adequete measures will be taken to protect such strategically important locations.

Rest assured the GoI know the locations of similar projects in the neighborhood.

Sure you can hide anything as long as you are quiet about it. Even if its not a well kept secret, the media blabbering about it is not helpful at all. I always get a response like this defending the leak saying its hard to find. Well, sure its not hard, its easier with the publicity. Has nobody in the defence ever read a book like Art of War or Chanankya? WTF? Just coz CHina or whoever else points it out, doesn;t mean we cant keep mum on it. China till now also has an extensive 3000 miles tunnel system that is not even well mapped out even today. Thats how you keep a secret. That tunnel system stores many tactical nukes, missiles, and god knows what else. India needs to step up..no more excuses...

Doubt it. A 90 day supply wont last much to and we would still be pressured. Our armed forces ge priority, India should be among the first to enact a green policy. Special pricing, tax exemptions for companies and civilians, etc for those who use battery, solar, fuel cell, hybrid vehicles. This would help the climate and ensure we are held hostage to any scenario's that may develop. Yes, some of the tech is not perfect but it will progress as capital pours in.

I heard in Netherlands farmers sell electricity back to the grid through their wind mills. Why can't we have such a system in India. Also encourage private companies to establish wind farms and in return they will get exemption in paying for power for their factories equal to the amount that they produce in their wind farms.

could be that he is just telling a lie about the location:meeting:
by now china would have compared satellite imageryq and pin pointed the location if in vishakapatnam... And the port city is most likely the best choice for such an asset..bite such assets are supposed to be above or below ground?

I high doubt that this is the only facility of this kind, the army is bound to have its own strategic reserve of oil for war case scenario, and disclosing this news is not gonna affect much of its security concerns, since its pretty hard to hide such large construction projects, and they will most likely have high security around the area.
At least let the other guy spend some bucks to find out his targets. We may not be able to hide the fact that the installation is some sort of petrol dump. Now everyone knows it is a strategic reserve and they also know by how much they can reduce our reserve if this installation is destroyed(some nice cost benefit analysis here). In a war, civilian targets won't be spared. Fuel depots are one of the favorites for attacks.

nice one
But seriously ministers should not lie, so Jaipal Reddy is not lying. He just wants to get some votes.

this is really a good move.

but i am just unable to understand why some of our friends are so worrying about annoncement of such thing. do they really don't know the capabilities of sattelites of this days? this kind of mammoth installations can be imaged by the satellites very easily with pin-point accuracy.

so there is nothing to worry about the announcement rather be happy with the news that the installation is about to be completed within 3-4 months itself.

let's not be so naive here, offcourse big installations cannot be hidden from sattelites but India can do it in a way not to attract a lot of attention. Lets not make it easier for them is all I'm saying..

good move..I think i heard this news long before...however a gud news.

Crude oil will be stored in underground rock caverns at three locations,

one on the east coast at Vishakhapatnam (capacity: 1 million metric tonnes) and

the other two on the west coast at Mangalore (2.5 million metric tonnes)

and Padur (1.5 million metric tonnes).

India is now planning to build strategic petroleum reserves of nearly 18 million tons, or 132 million barrels by 2020, expanding on a 5.33 million ton stockpile whose storage tanks are now under construction, Oil Secretary G.C. Chaturvedi told reporters.

This may cause problems with the U.S. and the International Energy Agency, who have a longstanding policy that strategic oil reserves should only be drawn on in times of physical shortage, and not be used as a hedge against price moves.

"These [strategic crude reserves] are mainly for contingency plans. It can be used in case of price fluctuations also," Mr. Chaturvedi said.

Mr. Chaturvedi said India will need 180 billion rupees ($3.41 billion) to fill the current crude reserves that are under construction. India relies on imports for 75% of its crude needs.

He didn't forecast how much the extra oil would cost but as this would be "substantial", the government may let overseas oil companies utilize the reserve.

Several overseas companies are interested in this and "we are looking at various models. We have not zeroed in on any model as yet," he said.

"They can use our storage and take oil out for selling when they want. But in case of need, we can force them to necessarily supply that crude to us," he said.

It will be good that govt. build more storage as our economy and demand is growing day by day they should forecast and build for the oil requirements for at least 6 months.
